I'm amazed I'm even writing this. Normally I just buy something, then live w/the good and the bad--very few products really stand out enough for me to give free advertising to the product. I mean, I get *paid* to deal w/computers and programming by the hour, so if I have a free hour, it's usually spent catching up on work.
But I've now owned this beauty for almost a year...and it's by far the best laptop I've ever had. Let me be clear--I'm one of those 'early adopters' who have purchased the high end of laptops for years, including the last laptop ever sold by DEC, the original Commodore 64 laptop (yikes, I'm showing me age), and nightmares w/Gateway and Dell on notebooks I spent well over 5K for (oh, those were the days--ouch). I finally found a decent manny of laptops, or so I thought--Lenovo/IBM. What I looked for is a long warranty--if a company was willing to guarantee their work for 5 years, I felt confident the machine was good. And it was--okay. Poor sound, poor screen, but the dang thing worked--and that's more than I could say for any Dell or Gateway I purchased *many of them*. After happening a half-dozen times, I began to believe in a Dell/Gateway conspiracy to purposely kill a laptop 13 months after purchase...I mean 100% of 6 laptops over 8 years from Dell and Gateway ALL died in months 13-15. Horrible support too--as if I was stupid for not purchasing the warranty. Heck. I have a car I've owned for 10 years and there's no warranty on that! Nor on my refrigerator or TV or Stereo--so why is your lousy PC dead consistently after 1 freaking year! (yes, I'm still ticked at Dell and Gateway. There's no excuse for 3 laptops going dead in 4 years for ONE customer--someone from Dell and Gateway should have done *something* after that, if they really cared about their 'long-term' customers. I mean, I could have been a buyer for life, which means, based on history, at least 20K+ more dollars spent on laptops!). As you can see, I'm not impressed w/too many laptop manufacturers. Mostly I buy the darn things because my job depends on it. And there are times I wish I'd become a fisherman (I'd have 100s of thousands of dollars of fishing gear by now ;-)). I finally needed another laptop, and considered Lenovo, but I glommed onto the Sony (I've owned them before and tech support was horrible), and decided to buy it. Now almost a year later, the screen is still incredible, the sound is the best I've ever had on a laptop, and it's just a really well built machine. I have to say I'm impressed...and it's not easy to impress this old war hound. Okay, after reading this again, this is more of a rant about other laptops than it is about Sony. But believe me. I've been buying these things for a long time. If you want a top of the line laptop and don't want to spend top of the line prices, buy the Sony VAIO. Remember, I'm not rating support of this machine...just the quality of the build.

I bought this laptop to substitute my older laptop which is now showing signs of age. I like the 1080p resolution of the screen and use this laptop to play Blu-ray discs and watch Netflix streaming. I also connect this to my bedroom TV through the HDMI output port. I am loving the laptop thus far.
