Product Description

VPLHW30AES Home Theater 3D ES Projector Bundle with 2 3D Glasses and Emitter The Sony VPL-HW30ES 3D Home Cinema Projector is a very nice projector with 1300 lumens of brightness and a 70000:1 contrast ratio. Packed with exciting innovative features which are easy to use and control, you can experience enhanced immersive 3D movie content without having to leave your sofa. Of course the VPL-HW30ES has the features you've come to expect from a high-quality installation projector. It can display 720p, 1080i and 1080p high definition images and its international capabilities include being able to automatically select and project NTSC, NTSC 4.43, PAL, PAL-M, PAL-N, PAL-60 and SECAM signals. It also has a world-ready 100 to 240 volt AC 50/60 Hz power supply. But with the VPL-HW30ES and a LAN connection you can do more. You can actually present from any computer on the network. If you manually register your PC's IP address with the projector, you can project from anywhere on the Internet. That's great for teleconferencing and distance learning applications.

I will start with a caveat - this is my first front projector, and I have learned from the ground up. Therefore read my review of this Sony projector with my disclosure up front. My old Sony LCD TV started developing blue spots, and it was time for a change. I was very interested in a front projection set-up, and explored several projectors. At a Best-Buy Magnolia store, I was able to compare a couple of short listed projectors, and one of them was the Sony HW30AES. Now this is actually a HW30ES projector, and the AES version also gives you two TDGJP1 viewing eyeglasses, the external IR emitter for the eyeglasses, and a recharging unit for the eyeglasses. Of course you need these extras only if you want a true 3D experience (when you opt for the VPLHW30AES), or if 2D will do, the VPLHW30ES is a bit cheaper and sold as such.

Opening the box gives you the projector, 2 pairs of glasses, the IR projector, remote, batteries and the charger for viewing glasses. The projector has 2 HDMI ports, and an IR port (the manual says you need a CAT7 ethernet network cable, but I got a CAT6 from Amazon, and it worked great). You will need the high-speed HDMI cables which support 3D, and a 3D blu ray player. Unboxing it was easy, and set up no problem at all. Eager to see what it could do, I connected it to a Panasonic BDT310 player (this player is truly is OUTSTANDING - see my review on this), popped in a 3D version of 'Despicable Me', and the family settled down for the first home 3D experience (I will outline the setup later). Although I had ordered a 100" screen, it was not yet set up and I ended up projecting it on our drywall (we have a light brown colored drywall with stucco!). Despite this, the image quality and the 3D WERE AMAZING. We could not believe the clarity and the 3D experience.

I recently purchased the Sony VLPHW30AES ( VLPHW30 series 3D with transmitter and 2 pairs of 3D glasses).
As a previous owner of a Sony VPLVW60 1080P 24 frame projector I have high video standards and expectations.

This being said, I was not sure what to expect given the lower price point and how a 3D optimized picture would stack up in 2D
mode. I was quite impressed with the fast start up time and the very deep black levels of the VLPHW30AES. The manual zoom and focus took some getting used to but works fine.

The 3D pictue on this relatively low cost projector is quite impressive, very bright and detailed with super deep black levels.

2D detail for 1080P 24 frame falls a little short compared to the VPLVW60 but not by much, given the VPLVW60 is twice the price and 50% heavier I was not disappointed. The remote backlight works great, all advance functions are there. Still trying to figure out the best cinema mode, the Low lamp mode is plenty bright for my needs.

I rate this high, 8.5~ 9.0 out of 10

The Amazon service and shipping time was great, well packed and with all the accessories !

This projector is absolutely unbelievable. Hands down beats the JVC DILA RS40 in 3D viewing and its 3X as bright as the VPL-HW90ES in 3D mode. Personally, I think their price point is a little low. 2D to 3D simulation is pretty cool too although not as good as a true 3D channel or movie. I already did a year's worth of research on this. No need to look anywhere else. Buy this thing.

For reference, I'm using a 120 DragonFly perferated screen with 1.35 gain. Even with the perf it's still bright.

I purchased a Sony VPLHW30AES projector about a month ago. I wanted to wait until we had some time to use the product before giving my opinion to others who may be shopping for a projector.
The project was super simple to set up and get going, we were watching movies on it within an hour of taking it out the box. I have a dedicated theatre room in my basement, so little ambient light. The picture quality is outstanding! One of things that amazes me is that you cannot hear this thing run even when it is the only thing on in the room. Aside from the faint click of the relays when you first turn it on, it puts out such little noise that you need to look at the LED's to make sure it is turned off when you are done using it.
I have heard from some people that 3D is not worth the added expense in a projector at this time. Bunk! We love it! The selection of 3D movies is still a little low, but we are seeing more and more titles appear. Definately worth the cost of the projector in my opinion.

The only drawback I found so far is the cost of the 3D glasses. The Sony VPLHW30AES is packaged with 2 pairs of TDG-PJ1 glasses, to purchase extras, the cost is around $100usd each. The projector is not compatable with the less expensive TDG-BRXXX series which sell for about half the price of the PJ1 model.

I am not a videophile, just an average movie buff. I love this product because it has shown me great results with minimal effort on my part to make it work.

I highly recommend the Sony VPLHW30AES.

I just built a home theater and this projector is the talk of the town!
I did get a lemon the first time though.
One of the problems with this projector is that the zoom and lens shift are manual. When I first installed the system, I had to scroll down to lens shift the image, but it just kept spinning and clicking. I tried for hours to get the image where I wanted it, but no sucess. I eventually contacted the Amazon seller and had them send me a new one. They were great. Within a week, a had a second machine and they paid for the return shipping on the first one.
The replacement machine had no issues with the image shift. Worked perfectly.

Now lets talk about the image quality. Just plain stunning!!
I have never owned a projector before so I have no comparison, but I have seen a few in my day. This is not your father or big brother's projector. The image quality is like nothing I have ever seen in someone's home. There are many who beleive that a projector cannot compete with an LCD/LED or plasma TV. Generally speaking, they are correct, but this one comes pretty close. I have a brand new 46" Samsung LED within viewing distance of this screen, so you can watch both at the same time. Yes, the LED TV is definitely brighter. But that's where the big advantage ends. With Blu-ray imput, this thing is just as sharp and clear. The 720p input is noticeabley worse though, but not much. This likely mainly due to image size. (Mine is projected onto a 106" screen)

There are a few tweeks you have to make with the brightness, contrast, etc. to get it where you want it. Just keep adjusting until you like it.

Just in case you are worried about input lag for gaming purposes...don't be. There is no lag what-so-ever.
