Technology

Cinema - to go
The VPL-HW50ES projects stunning 1080p 2D and 3D performance with a bright, vibrant picture, plus a 100,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and 2D to 3D up-scaling. Paired with a whisper-quiet fan and ulta-smooth playback with Motionflow technology, this projector is worth the price of admission.
Reality Creation processing
10 years in the making, Sony's proprietary Reality Creation processing reproduces the original image prior to compression to achieve 1080p. This works by analyzing each pixel, cross-referencing it to a database of images and patterns, then replacing the missing data from compression, producing a clearer, sharper, and more lifelike image.
Picture perfect
Want the perfect picture in your home theater? Get rich, deep black levels resulting from a 100,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. You'll also have no problem projecting right through ambient light brilliantly thanks to 1,700 ANSI lumen brightness.
Bye-bye black bars
Recreate a more authentic cinematic experience with the capability to eliminate black bars during movies. The VPL-HW50ES supports anamorphic 2.35 when paired with an external lens.
3D - better and brighter
The optional rechargeable 3D glasses work in perfect harmony with the integrated 3D emitter and Sony's dynamic lamp control technology for vibrant, cinema-quality 3D entertainment.
Align panels perfectly
144 zones panel alignment function allows for +/-2 pixels in 0.1 pixel increments - allowing you to align the panels perfectly for optimal picture quality. This functionality allows you to correct for potential chromatic aberration caused by an external anamorphic lens.

I spent a lot of time researching projectors before I bought this one. I was also tempted to get the older model of this series the HW30ES but in the end the extra features and better brightness of this unit won me over. I spent some time looking in person at various models of projectors and nothing under $10,000 even came close to the picture quality that this projector delivers. I really didn't seriously even consider anything else once I saw them all - the Sony is that much better.

I have this Sony projecting on a 120" 1.2-gain white screen and frankly, I couldn't be happier with it. It looks basically like a giant flatscreen television - every bit as good as the best TV you've ever seen, just huge! Some purists need a motorized lens (which this does not have) but if you're a normal-needs person who watches TV, movies, DVDs/Blurays, gaming and some 3D (all in 4:3 or 16:9 or higher) once the focus is set you just forget about it. The US packages even include two sets of 3D glasses and a replacement lamp (a few hundred dollars each). The glasses they include are pretty bad though, so I suggest you get some of the PS3 3D glasses as they're cheap and hold sync well (but can become a bit uncomfortable on the nose as they're a bit heavy). Speaking of 3D sync, the projector syncs the glasses by projecting an infrared signal out of the front of the projector; depending on your room, where you have the projector and how far it is to the screen and back to your eyes (signal bounces off the screen) you may want to get the outboard Sony 3D emitter - it costs about $79 but it makes the signal super-steady and attaches with a standard ethernet style cable. I just placed it on top of the projector (which I mounted upside-down from the ceiling) and the 3d glasses sync great.

If you're looking for a better-than-the-movie-theater image in your own home, this is the projector to get. Highly recommended!

While the VPL-HW55ES will be out any minute now (as of October, 2013), the VPL-HW50ES is a tremendous projector. Incredibly bright, and very sharp (especially with Reality Creation set to on).

For reference, my screen is 100" diagonal, 1.0 gain, and acoustically transparent. Throw is a hair under 12 feet.

I owned the HW30ES, its predecessor, for some time, so I wanted to also focus on the differences between the HW30ES and the HW50ES, for those having trouble deciding:

The HW50ES is:

1.) Brighter than the HW30. The difference is very, very noticeable. It's absolutely blindingly bright on my 100" 1.0 gain AT screen on high lamp. It's still really bright on low lamp mode. I may even have to dig around in the service menu to lower the maximum aperture of the iris. 3D brightness is excellent (locked to high, of course) on a screen my size.

2.) More color uniform than the HW30. One of my biggest beefs with projectors is color uniformity, and having had absolutely no luck with numerous 3LCD projectors from Epson and Panasonic, SXRD is a relief in many ways in terms of uniformity. While not quite as uniform as the JVC X30/RS45 I had (which was nigh-on perfect), the 50ES I have now is very close. No obvious tinges to the image on a white screen. My 30ES was "close" to uniform, but some random patches of "green" around the screen were occasionally (and I mean very rarely) noticeable on bright scenes. It didn't affect skin tones, thankfully, but it was there. 99.9% of people would never notice, but I'm a uniformity junkie.. I'm sure there were better examples of HW30s out there.

3.) Sharper. The pixel makeup is very, very similar between the HW30 and the HW50, potentially even the same, with Reality Creation set to OFF.
