When searching for a new mp3 player the trail always leads me back to Sony. Its more about overall quality then brand loyalty. Over the years Sony's Walkman line has gone the distance and more. The all new Sony S Series Walkman adds to the legacy.

The S-540 8gb Walkman brings it on with a crisp, color enhanced 2.4" LCD screen that is easy on the eyes. At 2" x 4" x .4", it comes in a bit larger then its older cousin. A larger body undoubtedly is required to provide support for the external speaker system. The speakers won't get confused with my home system anytime soon but they do provide an excellent source. With headphones on, this mp3 player delivers a cornucopia of sound. Missing but not that noticeable is the noise reduction feature. The on board equalizer can be tweaked to one's own preferences or users can choose one of the six presets.

The Navigation pad located directly under the screen is a breeze to operate. Three controls are located on the right side of the unit. One locks in the controls. The second one allows for easy switching from speaker to headset. Volume is the third control. The standard headphone jack and a USB port can be found on the bottom of the unit. The detachable flip out stand is an okay feature that allows for easy standing on my desk or shelf top. I would have preferred that it was permanently mounted.

The S-540 supports mp3, mp4, AAC, AVC, WMV, WMA, and PCM. PCM is Sony's version of WAV. It pairs well with Napster. Rhapsody is a no go. Downloading my playlists from Windows Media Player was a breeze without the usual hiccups associated with older mp3 players. Amazon video is now supported. I haven't downloaded video. I did download a couple of photographs on this model. The display was outstanding.

Myself ... I love this thing! For what I use this for (Listening to MP3 encoded Audio Books) this device is GREAT! Even the name 'Walkman' is great.

The buttons and menus are laid out logically and simply. I actually like the buttons better than the iPod wheel.

Compared to an iPod Nano:
This has speakers (which I never use).
This has an FM radio (which I never use).
Like the iPod It feels solid.
It is a bit bigger than the iPod nano - but it is not what I'd consider bulky.
When you have it plugged into the car battery (though an external power adapter that I got seperately) it does NOT pause. Too bad.
Can you load it up with files using windows explorer (wahoo! no more iTunes!).

I was looking for an MP3 player to listen to audiobooks from NetLibrary. This player does not have a bookmark feature, but you can use "pause" to stop the book. When you return the player starts at the same point. Screen is large enough to see. Controls are easy to understand and use. Other features -- voice recording, built-in speaker, photos and video -- all make this a great player to have!!

We purchased this player for our daughter in 4th grade over a month ago. She has already enjoyed great use of it--and loves the external speakers so she can listen to songs with others. [Beware if you really don't want to listen to your child playing the same songs over and over yourself!] Her Dad has done all the downloading and media purchasing/playlist assembly and we have loaded songs from personal discs, iTunes, and others--especially easy as it works well with our Sony desktop computer (a bonus we didn't think about). I found it a bit tricky to navigate the menu initially (didn't read any instructions) but then was able to access the FM radio function. Battery life has been good and we did purchase a separate car charger. She's the envy of friends who have other branded players that cost more and her Dad and I liked the idea of the "walkman" brand we loved as children of the 80's. It's been pretty durable as she lets her 2 year old brother walk around with it and it's survived. Quality of sound is fine to me, but if played too loud on the speakers might be a bit "tinny". I'm not too discerning with this, but my husband is. I am thinking of getting one for my own use, now.

Having owned a Nano for several years I was wary about switching to another branded mp3 player. However, I had always wanted better sound quality...something that could really pump out some music. After using this Sony player for about 2 months now, I have no regrets with making the switch. The sound is full and rich, and the bass really hits the spot. It was like hearing my entire music library for the first time - I could finally pick up those lows and even some highs that my Nano had been missing. The Hardware: Slim profile slips into my pocket, great for the gym, running, 2 built-in speakers really do the job with minimal distortion, Having a Dedicated volume button is refreshing. The Software: Navigation is easy, intuitive (but takes getting used to after using a Nano for so long). Video and pics look great. Windows Media player needs some polishing when it comes to creating playlists, but this is no fault of Sony's. Overall, great purchase. Would recommend!

I had been a faithful user of my old Memorex 1gb mp3 player, which I bought for 100$ way back when 1gb was a lot. Sadly, it was stolen a couple of months ago. My friend Freckles got this model for me, and I'm quite pleased with it. I was a little hesitant with big name-brand players because I don't like installing those annoying applications on my PC that most big companies tend to force you to use with their players. This Sony model was very easy to use with Windows 7 (which is what I run on my PC).
I like the design, the user interface, the upload program, the fact that is uses a rechargeable battery and the media quality. It's got a radio and voice recording, which comes in handy.

I cannot really say much about the durability, as I have not had it for long. But I'm hoping it'll be as loyal as my old mp3 player.
