5.0 out of 5 stars Works great
Works with my Sony Xplod BT5700U headunit. Cable is long and thin so it can be easily tucked under trim panels. Comes with 2 adhesive clips to hold cable if you are running it under the dash. Other people say the hear me quite well. I have it attached to the visor though it can be mounted to dash with adhesive tape too. It rotates nearly 180 degrees.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed!
Does not seem to be any more sensitive than the mic in the faceplate. Expected a little better product from Sony!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommend this external microphone, June 12, 2011

I am using this external microphone with the Sony MEXBT3900U Sony MEXBT3900U In-Dash CD Receiver MP3/WMA/AAC Player with Bluetooth. I had the microphone and the car stereo installed at the same time, at Best Buy. I have found the quality of the hands-free calling over Bluetooth to be excellent. I can hear callers very well through my car speakers (it is loud and very easy to hear!). Callers can hear me very well, even at high speeds (with windows closed!). I haven't opened up the window going 55 mph and checked the quality of the call, since this is a not realistic condition for me; but, may be if you have a convertible I guess.

I think the location where you install the microphone is very important. It should be fairly close to your mouth. After doing a lot of research on this, I had it installed on the visor (toward the left). I added some photos to the product page (I can't add photos to this review) so you can see how it looks. The microphone is fairly close to my mouth, so I think this contributes to the excellent quality I am getting. Just keep in mind that, with this microphone location (at least on my car), if you want to lower your visor, the cord on the microphone can bend a little, which I guess could degrade the cord over time. Therefore, if I want to lower the visor far down to block sun, I just remove the mic (mic is very easy to remove; it "clips" on and off easily).

I guess you could also install to the right of the visor, like the Parrot Bluetooth systems do, but it's a bit farther from your mouth, and harder to install. I've also seen it installed right behind the steering wheel on the "steering column", but heard more negatives about this location than positives, probably because it is farther from your mouth than the left of visor position.

Using with Sony Explode 3800 and 3900 head units. (good units; 3900 is now a much better deal and unit) Under 25mph the internal mic is ok. Over 25mph road noise begins to consume the transmission of the internal mic. At highway speed, internal mic is absolutely useless. With this external mic at highway speeds, listeners tell me they can hear me GREAT. From useless to fantastic...for only 29 bucks.

Without this item, in my 1993 Prelude, people complained that they couldn't hear me when the car was moving. With this item, the problem is solved. It comes with plenty of ways to mount it. I stuck it on my visor, and this works better than expected.

2.0 out of 5 stars Road noise, January 11, 2011

I bought this for my son's '98 Civic. Terrible road noise pick-up. I have a Dual BT unit w/ext mic included that works great and cost half the price of my son's Sony unit w/ext mic purchased seperate. Lesson learned I suppose.

Little improvement over the built in speaker. My wife commented that her Black Berry on speakerphone was better in performance than the new microphone.

Bought this for my Sony mex-bt3800u because people complained they couldn't hear me. Mounted the mic, tried all the suggested mounting positions, still no one could really hear me. Did not work at all. Waste.

What you see is what you get. All the necessary parts and documentation are there, not that it requires any documentation because installation is simple. I've had it for a couple months and it's worked just as well as I'd hoped it would.
