Customer Reviews

Overall Sonys camera is GREAT and it works EXCELLENT!!!
Peter C. Mouton
It is actually made in Japan, as opposed to the other cameras on ebay that are made in China, and the quality shows.
Even at night with my back up lights on and still has a very good image.

This little camera has a wide viewing angle making it easy to see everything behind you. The image it sends to my Pioneer 3300BT radio is short of amazing. It's clear both day and night. At night it's lit up like you have bright lights shining out of it. I actually turned it on and went to the rear to see if lights were on because the view is that bright. I wired the backup wire on this to switched power (that is on when the car is), since my radio has a reverse turn on and a button that lets you see behind anytime when you are driving or sitting in park. I used the included 3m adhesive to attach this instead of running screws into my car. This thing is stuck on so good that it won't go anywhere. The other day while washing my car I purposely sprayed it directly with water (since it was still under warranty) to make sure it could handle the rain and being wet. No problems whatsoever. I highly recommend this camera even if you don't have a Sony radio. It is universal as it has a ground, switched power, and a RCA cable coming out of a small separate box. One small cable runs to the camera itself and that is it. I've attached a customer image up top so you can see how small it is and what it would like with the cover painted to match. I'm happy with this purchase :)

I purchased this camera based on provided reviews.. Here is a quick blurb on my experience:
About me first. I am a professional A/V installer that operates my own custom electronics integration company. We primarily work with clients installing mid to high end home entertainments systems, home theaters/media room, home automation and home surveillance. The SONY XA-R800C camera was purchased to be used on a new Nissan NV2500 HD High Top Van with a Sonar Assisted Backing System. The camera is connected to a JENSEN VM9725BT Multimedia/Navigation System. The camera was installed in the location that NISSAN intended should my van had been purchased with a factory/dealer installed camera system. Camera has been in use for 2 weeks, and since then has not been exposed to heavy rain, snow or sleet.

HIGHLY IMPORTANT NOTE: This camera MUST be installed on an area of the vehicle that provides cover and protection from RAIN, SLEET, SNOW and DIRECT SUNLIGHT! This camera IS NOT WATERTIGHT... only water resistant when installed per directions. See attached info in Product Gallery for precise warning/instructions.
I am a professional, installation of this product took approximately 3 hours. I did not use the included Composite Video Cable - I instead built my own custom cable to length with Gold Plated RCA-type connectors. All cables, connectors and Sony Power Supply unit are discretely mounted within the van. Time in determining EXACT location and view from camera was not included in the estimated installation time of 3 hrs.

So I just finished a 3-weekend install of a GM Factory DVD navigation and Sony Rear Camera into my 2007 GMC Acadia (SLT-2).
The install of the DVD/NAV was pretty easy, one day... 2 hours... and it was plug and play.

The Rear Cam was a little more tricky as I had to install a PAC VCI-GM3 video adapter to the GM NAV unit to be able to run my own camera.
Obviously this isn't the fault of Sony as I wanted to run a stock NAV unit versus an aftermarket one like Alpine or Clarion.

Anyway, if you think strictly the cam install... for an SUV like the ACADIA, your mounting point will most likely be the trim above the license plate. This is a nice plastic piece (easy to drill into) and it usually has an opening into the liftgate that is used for the factory wires to the license plate bulb or lock. So you would run the Sony cam cable/connector along with that factory wiring.

With the liftgate, you'll have to remove the factory inside covers, most just pop out. You'd then mount the Cam Brain inside the liftgate. 3m Double stick tape is perfect for this. Plug the cam cable into the brain... and from here, you can pick up the power/reverse off the reverse lights as most are on the liftgate.

What makes the last cable tricky is the Video one. Chances are you have a head unit in the car with a monitor, or have the monitor in the front of the car. So you need to run the video from the cam to your monitor. You DON'T want to run it along the outside of the car - where the liftgate meets the body. That part of the car gets A LOT of rain water... and the cable still needs to go into your car... so it might be pinched when the liftgate is closed.

Product was easy to install and works as advertised. The only thing I'd want is a longer harness between the camera and the control box. It was clearly made to be used on a car or SUV, not a truck. The ~3m long harness barely makes it into the rear of my cab (and I only have a 5.5' bed). From there, the RCA video cable is plenty long enough to make it to your LCD screen or mirror. I looked but could not find an extension harness for this camera.
