Hybrid, 2-way, In-Ear Headphones
Prepare for an exceptional in-ear listening experience beyond compare and treat your ears to: deep bass, radiant mids, smooth highs, and notable vocal clarity. For the first time, proven Sony dynamic drivers are paired with cutting-edge Balanced Armature driver technology to deliver rich, dynamic, and detailed audio response.
For years, Dynamic driver units have served us well, delivering reliable sound with rich bass all at low distortion levels. Balanced Armature headphones, on the other hand, are noted for their delivery of smooth and broad frequency response with notable vocal clarity.
Recipe for Hybrid Audio
Combining proven 9mm dynamic driver units (rich, full frequency response) with cutting-edge full-range, Balanced Armature technology (full-range = broad frequency response with notable vocal clarity) for an in-ear listening experience embracing the best of both worlds: profound vocal sound with extended bass.
Vibration Suppression Housing
A special sandwich consisting of a magnesium inner housing and ABS exterior provides the necessary rigidity for smooth frequency response and vibration suppression for clear mid-high range sound reproduction.
Just your size…
Improved fit results in significantly lower sound leakage levels, both in or out, giving you uninterrupted access to your music.
Tangle-free, Flat cord
The durable, 1.2m flat cord has a serrated finish that reduces tangles, so you can get caught up in your music, not your cord.
Keep it together
A compact carrying pouch is included to keep your headphones and headphone accessories secure.

So I bought these.
I was curious about them partly because I had read conflicting reviews: The Wire rated them the best in-ear 'phones under $200, whereas another reviewer I respect, Lachlan(likesathing), rated them so-so, and Whathifi panned them (two stars out of five). In this instance, I side with The Wire. These earphones sound great! This goes to show that ears, expectations, and opinions differ.
I don't rate items much in terms of packaging and accessories. Throw me a great item in a plain paper sack and I am happy. As refurbs, these Sonys came in their soft case with the extra ear tips, a shirt clip, and a cord winder (kind of nice, actually) stuffed at the bottom. Fine! I suspect if you buy them new the packaging is more impressive. I would prefer to save money on a good refurb, thanks.
These earbuds are slightly on the large side, since they use two drivers, one dynamic and one balanced armature (this is why they are called a "hybrid.") but they fit comfortably, at least for me. I like the flat cord, which resists tangling. There is no three button remote. For me this is fine; I am old school and don't need to take calls or change tracks and volume level via the cable.
The sound quality is the thing, and I think these sound TERRIFIC. They are clear and crisp, and all frequencies are nicely reproduced. The sound signature is one that is slightly more favorable to electronic music than softer, more acoustic genres, but piano, violin, and guitar actually come through gorgeously.Read more ›
Firstly since I paid $50 more than xb90ex (95$) my expectations were bit high. xb90 had 16mm driver and I really liked it and the second I put h1 in my ear and pressed "play" I felt that they were small 9mm drivers, don't get me wrong, I didn't literally feel the size of the driver but it has somewhat thinner sound, the sound that you can tell it comes from earbuds, which wasn't the case when listening to xb90.
xb90 had huge soundstage so the first thing that disappointed me when I tried XBA H1 was the soundstage. while it's still larger than low-priced headphones(< 70$) it is nowhere as wide as xb90's (though it's better than ex310's) . On the other hand instrument separation is very good, I would say better than xb90, highs and lows don't distract each other, I think 2-way drivers have something to do with this.
compared to xb90 subbass somewhat lacks, generally bass is good and high enough for me and majority of listeners but that subwoofer feeling of xb90ex is gone. Midbass is punchy and fast, slightly better than xb90's. Overral bass is almost as good as xb90's
Mids are definitely front-oriented, bright and clean.female vocal is really joy to listen. I think generally this is easiest area for IEMs to perform and there is no point to talk much about it. In one word, mids are very pleasant to listen.
before burning in, highs were harsh, bright and there was sibilance, after burn-in the harshness smoothed and sibilance faded away (not completely though), in fact it got too smooth for my taste. Arguably inferior performer compared to xb90ex in this area, which had very smooth but bright treble.Read more ›
Sound wise they are great. Handles a wide variety of music. Vocals are great, bass is great, highs are smooth. These are not bass monsters at all. The XBAH1 are really good full range "speakers". I would compare these to my B&O speakers.
The hybrid foam tips don't work for me at all. They just suck and get rid of the bass. My ear canals are not made for them. But they would be great for those Trebleheads.
The little soft case is nice. The red cable is soft, but I'm not sure how long they will last. The earphone is light and you forget sometimes that they are even in there. The plug is sturdy and looks good.
I'm driving them with a FIO E12A. Using the high gain setting. Player is just an iphone with Denon and BBE pro apps.
Also if you can do with the oversized driver unit you can try the mdrxb90 from sony . I have xb60 and they sound pretty similar to xba h1
