I remember back in the 1980's, Sony TVs were the thing to get. Those Trinitron CRT sets just seemed to have a brighter, crisper picture than anyone else out there. They suffered a little bit in the last few years as their competitors closed the gap of price and quality. This new series of 4K TVs may be just the thing Sony needs to remind everyone that they're still one of the best out there.

I had a couple things on my list: 4K, 3D, a decent-looking design, a set that wouldn't be obsolete in a year, and a set that was relatively affordable. Here's how the set did.

4K:

The first time I walked into a Best Buy and saw a TV with a 4K picture, my jaw dropped. Seeing 4K for the first time reminded me of the time I saw 1080i for the first time in a Tokyo airport. The picture improvement is that much clearer and crisper. Sure enough, the 4K rendering on this set is terrific--color fidelity is spot-on and the picture is bright.

Of course, 4K is really only good for early adopters and technophiles right now, as there isn't much 4K content out there and likely won't be for years. Cable companies aren't going to support it until there's a critical mass (heck, most are still broadcasting at 720p). The only other ways outside of the TV to get 4K content is through a PC (you'll need an upgraded video card) or a media server, which will cost extra.

That said, I was able to connect directly to NetFlix through the TV. There's a handful of 4K programs available, which as of this writing includes movies like Ghostbusters, Philadelphia, and Smurfs 2; TV shows like Breaking Bad and House of Cards; and a couple of mediocre nature films. I loaded up House of Cards and I was blown away; it was surreal, more like watching a home movie of Kevin Spacey than a TV show.

I just bought this TV a few days ago, and since receiving it and using it, I can honestly say I love it. It is my favorite TV of the many I've owned, a spot previously held by a Philips 1080p with Ambilight which, while dated, was reliable and beautiful. But this new XBR takes the cake. That said, I do have three small complaints, two of which could be fixed with software/firmware updates (hint, hint if anyone at Sony engineering is reading this). I'll start with the good, and move to the complaints.

THE GOOD:

The Picture - This is probably the most important thing to most TV purchasers, and I can tell you that this TV does not disappoint. The color is beautiful, which is apparently to be expected based on professional reviews of past years of the XBR line. The colors are bright, motion is smooth, blacks are deep, and I have yet to see an artifact that isn't the result of Internet streaming. The 4K is very impressive. There isn't a ton of 4K content out there, but from what I have been able to watch on this unit (a few Netflix shows), this TV handles 4K wonderfully. I don't know that the 4K picture is necessarily better than competing units from Samsung or LG (after all, they all are the same resolution), but the 4K on this unit is top of the line. Combine that with the beautiful color, even lighting (even though it's side lit), and great contrast, and you have what I think is one of the best 4K pictures on the market. The upscaling works pretty well, but it's still upscaling, so don't expect upscaled 4K pictures to look like native 4K pictures. For backgrounds and normal surfaces, it works very well, but for fine detail, you can't fill in what isn't there in the initial data stream - the TV can't put hairs on someone's head, for example.

Beautiful 4K television, but with some flaws that are not so insignificant.

Pros:
-Picture is outstanding. Colors and blacks are very good, better than average non-plasma screens
-Upscaling 1080p (24p only) is surprisingly good
-Plenty of features
-Looks good, small bezel, I personally like the stand

Cons:
-Startup time is annoying. If you want to change inputs or access a menu after turning the TV on, you have to wait 15-30 seconds while it powers on. And then for a further 15-30 seconds after that the remote inputs are clunky and delayed (like a computer that is low on memory).
-Input lag is around 30-40ms at best in game mode. 100+ms at its worst in sport mode. This is an issue because if you have your audio going to a separate audio system (which most people do), and are watching in sport mode (if you're into the image smoothing features), you get lag between picture and audio which is very significant. Basically you hear people talk before their mouths move on screen. This issue can be solved if you just have your audio go into the TV first, and then use the audio output of the TV to send the signal to your audio system. However, if you have surround and are using optical audio (like I do), you will be severely limited on output options. The TV does not output 5.1 at all. For surround you must have your audio source connected directly to your audio system. And unless your audio system has a very significant lag (which it almost certainly won't) your audio and video will be out of sync to some extent.
-There is a decent amount of back light bleed around the corners especially, however the back light (it's actually edge lit) will dim when the screen is completely black to make it less noticeable.
