This review is from: Sony XSMP1620W Marine Speaker, 6.5-Inch Woofer, and 2-Inch Tweeter (Electronics)
I spent the extra money on the Sony speakers because I thought their materials/build quality would hold up better in the harsh marine environment, but after about a month on our 38 foot catamaran these speakers started to rust! Gradually a brown streak stained the speaker from the center cone to the bottom, leaching onto the fiberglass underneath it. While they still worked, I was surprised that a Sony product would start to degrade as fast as it did. Maybe it's impossible to build a speaker that won't do this, but in that case they should come in the color brown... Oh, the sound was great, so they still get two stars.

Sony Marine Speakers,
This review is from: Sony XSMP1620W Marine Speaker, 6.5-Inch Woofer, and 2-Inch Tweeter (Electronics)
I installed these speakers a few years ago and while running my boat this weekend I noticed one speaker was broken and then watched the other speaker fall into pieces. The volume was not high, I had just turned on the radio to make sure it would still work. I had not used the stereo more than 4 times, the boat is seldom used and is kept under a cover. I would avoid this product, I had Clarion marine speakers on my last boat without any problems.

Great sound, terrible reliability.,

I bought a pair of these in March '09. I was initially impressed with the sound. Unfortunately, I found that the cones were severely warped and separated from the surrounds in July '10. The boat operates in salt water, fairly light use, rinsed after each use and the boat was covered while not being used. In other words, there is no way that this should have happened in my opinion. I have been a big Sony fan over the years, so I was very surprised and disappointed that these lasted such a short time.
