I purchased this as a replacement for an older Sony CD boombox that died a painful death. The design, features and sound quality of the ZS-X10 are all great. My sole complaint is that like all previous Sony CD players/stereos/etc, this one doesn't come with a standard power cord. It comes with a GINORMOUS wall wart.

Having to shlep that big, bulky thing around all but eliminates this unit's ability to perform as a portable device. I understand that by using an external transformer it saves Sony the cost of undergoing testing by the Underwriters Laboratories to get a UL rating, but billing this device as a portable boombox without making that detail clear in any of the sales literature is akin to a bait and switch. I have *never* seen a portable stereo come with a wall wart before.

I went back and forth for about a week trying to decide whether or not to return the unit, but since I plan to use it solely in the bedroom and don't plan to take it out, I ultimately chose to keep it.

If you're looking for a unit that will live in your house and rarely move, this is a great unit. If you're looking for something to take back and forth to work or move on a regular basis, I would suggest that you look at something else instead.

I was surprised at the quality and presence of this small lightweight item, which I bought for the convenience of travel, not expecting such fine sound. I have a large collection of old quality sound equipment, and this is not something I would regard as a COMPROMISE, it is most excellent to my ear. The smooth design is also museum worthy, nothing sticks out to get broken, it is a pleasure, and I recommend it highly.

this is a great outdoor stereo. we love it on our porch. the sound is clear even with louder volume. a great buy! i would highly recommend this boombox, and i got it at good price on amazon.

My wife just picked this up and its attractive, pretty cool looking and sounds decent for its size. I agree the wall wart is a slight negative.

The main negative about this unit and the reason for 3 stars is it's inability to play computer burned "mp3 discs" (the kind with 100-200 songs on them) ... but can still play computer created discs in the traditional format (non mp3, the kind usually limited to 19-23 songs ... wav file burned). So if you burn a regular (traditional) disc from itunes, it'll play em. But if you try to put 200 of your favorite mp3 files onto an mp3 data discs -- it's not going to play it. I just think any CD player sold in 2006 or 2007 should have mp3 disc support, not just CD-R / CD-RW traditional CD support. Part of that might be because this unit was originally a 2003 model, when MP3 support was far less common.

I agree it seems to have fast spin-up speed, meaning when you put in a disc ... your able to play within a couple seconds, which is faster than normal.

Don't have reservations about buying this unit unless the mp3 disc compatibility is a big "must have" for you.

A very good boombox, however.....the forward button on the cd section broke after the first week. whenever I play a cd i cant skip forward any tracks.

BOUGHT FOR MY DAUGHTER TO DRAG AROUND BECAUSE SHE WANTS TO DANCE EVERYWHERE! VERY HAPPY. LIGHT ENOUGH FOR HER TO CARRY YET STABLE. GOOD SOUND AND EASY TO OPERATE. I LIKE THE SHAPE, VERY CONVIENIENT. HOPE THIS HELPS.

I have only owned this for a few hours and already I am very pleased with my decision. I bought it for my basement family room, that's where we have all of our get-togethers, and it is perfect. Not too loud, not too soft. Not too much bass, I hate when it sounds like a teenagers car stereo, bigger than I thought, but still a funky slim design that looks great on the shelf. If you are on the fence, buy this, it's worth it.

Had the item for about two weeks, bought it for our nursery for CDs, have used in garage & outside because it so easy to carry and the sound is better than expected, plays burnt CDs fine and gets good AM/FM reception and nice that antenna can be hidden if needed. Actually bought another one for a friend of mine as well . . . accurate description on Amazon and all good so far . .

I utilize this Sony ZS-X10 on my deck while basking outside on nice sunny days and cool evenings. I use it a lot for playing my collection
of early 50's to mid 60's doo-wop recordings, which I have painstakingly
converted from analog vinyl to digital compact disc. Over 750 original tracks taken from both 45rpm and LP formats. The sound is quite good for a device this inexpensive. No, it doesn't meet audiophile standards but I've never heard a home portable sound system that does. It looks sharp, is easy to operate and with "megabase" in operation sounds better than units costing much more. The only thing that would make it a perfect buy is the addition of a remote control. Commercial CD's sound very good and
the FM/AM radio pulls in strong and weaker signals without hiss or noise.
A great boom-box, for the minor investment, as a gift or for yourself.

Bought this thru amazon-no tax/shipping-target has same price $79.99-but then pay tax. Sound is very good-even when loud. I was looking for a radio for the outdoors/beach. While the CD player was playing a CD/R-I lifted the unit and placed it down-also tilted it upwards-and the CD was still playing. (shock sensor) One complaint is the fwd/back selection for the CD tracks/radio preset is a knob on the handle-could be an issue of being snapped off (as 1 previous reader stated). Sony website says 2 position megabass-so far there is only 1-when the magabass button is pressed-the 'megabass' word comes on-and you have more bass-press it again and it goes off. The AC adapter is a 9V LARGE adapter-too BIG-not the usual cord-and of course no place to store it on the unit-so it has to be carried separately. Have not tried it with batteries yet (to see how long radio/CD lasts)
