Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Dolly Parton says that if Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt had a daughter she'd sound like Sonya Isaacs. Sorry Dolly, but Sonya's first mama would have to be Patty Loveless. Just listen to her sing "I've Forgotten How You Feel." And isn't it Patty you think of when you read "two badly broken barely beatin' hearts," the lyrics to another of Sonya's songs? Isaacs, who came from bluegrass and gospel as lead singer and mandolin player in her family band the Isaacs, is a protégé of Vince Gill, who produced the seven best cuts and provides angelic harmony. Yet the album never completely jells, victimized to a large part by the addition of two more producers and additional mainstream tracks. Isaacs's soprano seems too thin to carry the country-pop tunes, and surprisingly, she doesn't display enough high-lonesome heart for the grassier stuff. That said, she shines on "Just Go," a song she wrote about the pain of unrequited love; on "Healing Hands" with guest Parton; and on the Celtic-flavored spiritual "The Battlefield." Next time out, she may do better, or she might also think about detouring the star route to concentrate on her real strength, songwriting. We already have one Patty Loveless, and taking Trisha Yearwood into consideration, two Ronstadts. --Alanna Nash

5.0 out of 5 stars A Money Back Guarantee Wouldn't Cost Anyone A Dime, November 11, 2000
By
This review is from: Sonya Isaacs (Audio CD)
Lyric Street Records, Amazon.com, or Fred's Record Shop could offer a money back guarantee on this record and put the anticipated amount of returns in an escrow account and have change left from a nickel after making the first and only deposit.

If the artist were Shania, Faith, The Chicks, or anyone with an established "name," this record would sell in the millions and the songs would be all over the radio. Give a listen to any of these songs, but particularly "Let's Not Lose Each Other Anymore," "How Can I Forget," "Just Go," and "Healing Hands" and you'll buy the record and gladly pay the price of the record, or more, for next-day delivery.

This girl has a voice. This girl can write. This girl can perform. And it doesn't hurt that she's beautiful in the same kind of way as Faith Hill, Sara Evans, or any one of a number of movie-star types. Notwithstanding the good looks, a blind man would appreciate this record.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible., February 11, 2001

This review is from: Sonya Isaacs (Audio CD)
I bought Sonya's CD based on the fact that I truly enjoy Vince Gill's music, and I'd read somewhere that he sings with her on this CD, and that he'd even produced some of the songs on it. Well, I must say I wasn't disappointed in my purchase ONE BIT. Sonya's voice is pure and clear and very unique. Her songwriting is great, too. I am not a huge fan of Shania or of Martina or Faith, and had about given up on the young women of country until I heard Sonya. Her voice stands out like a bright white light on a canvas of black velvet. Smooth, clear, lyrical and tender. If you like soft, sweet, and strong, here's a girl for you.
