3.0 out of 5 stars Good But Not Great
The New York and Washington, DC based duo of Asheru and Blue Black (of larger collective Unspoken Heard) has been heavily touted by the suburban backpacker hip-hop community since their initial vinyl singles. Now affiliated with Brooklyn's 7 Heads Entertainment/Management, this promising group finally delivers their debut album. Jazzy in sonic texture, Asheru and Blue...

"Yo, have you heard...of the Unspoken Heard?"

--"who?"

"Asheru and Blue Black, 'Soon Come', i'm tellin' you, it's the best produced hip-hop album of the year!"

The "best produced hip-hop album of the year" was my introduction to the world of the Unspoken Heard. I was in a small, locally owned record store when i first heard "Soon Come". Sitting at a listening station, one is usually inclined to skip through the tracks like:
yes yes no no yes no no no no no no

But on this occasion, i was fixed to the sound of something slightly familiar yet ever so fresh.
F-R-E-S-H
i listened to half the album that day in the store (until closing time...i'm a late riser). There's nothing quite like that feeling of discovery...ripping open the shrink wrap...listening to a new album...reading all the liner notes and absorbing a new world of life and sound.

"Soon Come" has since become one of those albums, a trusted friend and companion on this life journey...

Soncially, this album stands out as a masterpiece. With production from J Rawls, Khalil, Joe Money, Djinji Brown, Geology and 88 Keys, "Soon Come" gets a nod from some of hip-hop's most creative beat-makers.

Many hip-hop albums today pay little attention to the use of "live" sound. "Soon Come" IS the best produced album of the year because it utilizes the richness of LIVE sound without overstepping the bounds...tempting in a time when technology makes it possible for anyone to sound good.
Don't get me wrong...this album will rock your head off your neck...but still...the sound, the SOUND is so &*%#ing pure.

Very rarely to you find an album which features each track as its own world...its own room in which to sit and experience.
"Soon Come" is the architect's playground built with a multitude of sonic spaces filled with rich colors and beautiful blends.

Tracks such as "Truly Unique" and "Dear You" are soaked with detailed descriptions of personal life stories from Asheru and Blue Black, while anthems like "Soul" and "Soon Come" reverberate in your mind long after the CD has been ejected from your player

did i mention "Soul" and "Soon Come" as anthems?
just checking

are you nodding your head to the beat yet?
you should be

If you grew up with Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, or simply enjoy a lift...be sure to check out Asheru and Blue Black of the Unspoken Heard ("music for the up and coming")

Before this album goes down as a hip-hop classic, be sure to grab it and enjoy the journey...and next time bring a friend!

Have you heard of the Unspoken Heard?
Soon Come you will.

5.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 Stars - Unspoken Heard, May 12, 2006

Asheru & Blue Black's debut "Soon Come" takes hiphop back to the roots & is undoubtedly one of the most satisfying albums to come out of 2001. Incase you don't know, Asheru & Blue Black are straight "in it for the love of hiphop" Mc's who don't ever talk bout materialistic ish, or drop battle rap type lyrics constantly biggin themselves up. They're refreshing artists who kick material which is essentially food for thought. With production from Asheru himself, J-rawls, Richy Pitch, 88 Keys, Dj Khalil, Geology & other respectable producers you can bet that Soon Come provides the same level of consistency from a musical point of view. This is feel good music, to chill to..with its prominent - jazzy & funky vibe. Fans of most genres will find this album appealing to their taste, as it consists of different musical instruments & vibes throughout.... for all occasions. If you want some hiphop that makes you feel refreshed and strangely satisfied when the music comes to an end, then this is for you.Simple, enough said. Do not Sleep. PEACE

5.0 out of 5 stars DOPE IN THE TRUEST SENSE, September 10, 2005

Hiphop was my first love and I will always cherish this music and find solace in this place known as the underground. But lately ive been losing faith in the music i love so much the 2004 2005 year was very dissapointing for a head like me the lack of listenable underground albums and overload of wack radio centered MTV rappers cannot be overlooked. Did you know that now we even have a rapper called pretty ricky. SHEESH it seemed like all hope was lost when I was browsing at the local record store and decided to take a listen to this one I was litterally blown away and the rest is history. I have had this album for two years and it still bumps like the day I got it production from Wes Jackson makes this a Hiphop masterpiece worthy of all other producers worship. Asheru and Blue Black are great MCs and spit laid back but knowledge filled flows that easily puts them both on my top 10 MCs list. In a world where so many kids are misled by this Coporate bull crap on MTV Asheru and wes jackson shine as true B-boys that will stand the test of time. also be sure to check out J-live ALL OF THE ABOVE also produced by Wes Jackson

4.0 out of 5 stars Jazzy, April 10, 2003

Seven Heads has a winner with this one. Asheru and Blue Black are conscious MC's, but they don't get overly preachy in their lyrics. The backing, done largely by Asheru and DJ Bolex is awesome, jazzy stuff reminiscent of a lot of the Native Tongues stuff of the nineties or some newer underground stuff, especially Five Deez' Fat Jon or Lone Catalysts' J. Rawls (not too surprising, since he actually helps out on a couple tracks). Favorite tracks: Soul, This Is Me, Dear You (with a really cool Chill Will freestyle), Truly Unique, and the title track. All in all, a solid effort throughout. Check it out if you dig jazz-centric hip hop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can you hear it????, February 26, 2003
This review is from: Soon Come (Audio CD)
The beauty of hip-hop is that it is in a constant state of flux as are we all. The sum total of our experiences ever changing ever growing...and so it is Unspoken Heard. Quite honestly one of the most refreshing contributions to Hip-Hop in quite a while. This album makes you remember WHY you fell in love with Hip-Hop in the first place. "Elevator Music," c'mon man it's for the up and coming...it's esoteric powers transport you back to that time when Hip-Hop was your passion. Out of love...you lived it, out of love...Unspoken Heard rips it, bringing artistry back to the craft of mc-ing...

MC Asheru...mark my words within 5 years he will be the hottest MC in the game.

5.0 out of 5 stars WHAT HIP HOP IS ALL ABOUT....HOT, HOT, HOT, September 29, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Soon Come (Audio CD)
Since the WTC tradgedy I have really not wanted to listen to any jiggy/gun-pop material. Simply put, I WANT SOUL!!! The major labels really don't put out that much soul music anymore. When I discovered Asheru and Blue Black I got the same great feeling I got when I discovered Mos Def, Kweli and Hi Tek. BIG PROPS to Seven Heads and all the other independent labels like Rawkus, Superegular, DCide, Def Jux, Koch and Fat Beats.

This album is very reminissent of De La and the native tongue movement in the late 80's and early 90's with a new twist. Asheru and Blue Black have put together an album that incorporates hiphop, soul, and jaz with just the right proportions! Shout outs to the mid atlantic for gettin on. And its good to see that the mid atlantic is gonna be known for innovative music, rather than coookie cutter groups that are so abundant nowadays! Peace to sevenheads entertainment. Keep bringin that soulful, innovative hip hop and we can balance the industry out! This is a definite buy for any real hip hop head!

With all the foolishness out here these days it was good to here some good old Hip Hop. These guys are no Jadakiss sound alikes or Jigga wannabees. This reminds me of the times when I frst started buying records. Brand Nubian, Artifacts, Jungle Brothers type goodness. It's laid back, jazzy but the beats really bang when they have to. And Asheru and Blue Black can spit with the best of them. I must admit I am biased because I have been following since I first saw them in DC at State of The Union. It's good to some cats from Mid Atlantic doing it. Truly Unique is my joint!!! That some good club music. I also dig the joint "Soul", and "Elevator Music" and the title track. I have never written a review ..., but I had to shout these guys out. I haven't bought a satisfying album like this in 6 months. Highly reccomended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Try Before You Die.., July 19, 2007
This review is from: Soon Come (Audio CD)
This album has to be on the list of things to listen to before you die. I let one head listen to it, and he came back at me with "It changed my life" Thats all that needed to be said between him and I on the album. Words cannot quantify the talent of either Asheru or Blue Black. It makes you truely humble at the idea that one can make such art and share with the rest of the world.
