1.0 out of 5 stars A little creepy
I found this book and its sequel slightly disturbing even as a kid. It seemed to be encouraging really adult behavior from its 13-year old character. Even though I was close to her age, sex with a 17-year old was something I knew was not a good choice! The movie is slightly less disturbing as it ends with a kiss, but it seemed anything but innocent and sweet to me. It...

for any girl who fantasized and dreamed about an "older" guy. I watched the movie version first when it came out in 1979 as an ABC Afterschool special and bought the book version a month ago.

Jessie Walters is a thirteen year old teenager who falls for her seventeen year old guitar instructor Michael Skye, who also plays and sings in his own band. Through the magic of makeup, Jessie is able to transform herself to look older and as she and Michael get to know each other, he asks how old she is and she blurts out that she is 16!

Michael asks her to one of his band practices and from there the two seem to click and fall for the other. Although Jessie hates deceiving Michael, she can't seem to stop herself because she is afraid of losing him. The moment of truth comes when she goes out on a date to the drive in with him. Will she, or won't she give in to the strong feelings Michael provokes in her?

I would recommend this book to anyone who would love to take a trip down memory lane and think about that first love you will never quite forget. Sooner or Later is a classic that is a treasure to own in book and movie form.

I read this book & saw the movie when I was 15 (pretty long ago). I am always trying to stimulate my daughter to read & I remembered this story. I have been looking for the book for a year now, but can't find it. I will not give up!

I first saw this movie when I was 14 and I rushed right out and bought the book. I think that's where my crushes on rock stars began! To this day I still have a softness in my heart for guys in bands and the movie is one of my all-time favorites. I was lucky enough to find a copy of it on Ebay. I really wish they would play this movie again on TV and re-print the books. Another generation of 14-year-olds would just love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite book and movie., January 8, 2000
This review is from: Sooner or Later (Paperback)
Recently, I found the book at my parents place. As soon as I found it I had to read it again. I remembered how much I loved this movie with Rex Smith & Denise Miller. It got me thinking of how this movie and book influenced me and my friends back then. It would be so good for teenagers now, as it was for me and my friends when it came out.

I borrowed this book from my friend when I was in Junior High. After reading it, I really wanted a cute guitar teacher! It's great... I wish I could find it again!

4.0 out of 5 stars A definite blast from my past, March 19, 2000

I owned the record/lp - still have a taped copy of the songs! Played it again and again. The movie was so "it" when I was 13 - guess I just admitted my age. The book is an enjoyable read and I do think teens would benefit from reading it or seeing the movie. Wish there were more "innocent" movies/books like this out there now adays - maybe our kids would be kinder to one another and more understanding of people's feelings.

The movie is slightly less disturbing as it ends with a kiss, but it seemed anything but innocent and sweet to me. It seemed like a reflection of 1970s attitude on casual sex and dating. It may seem kitchsy and cute in retrospect, but I don't think I'd want a child that age watching it these days.
