Well composed,
By A Customer
This review is from: Sootface (Paperback)
Although the retelling of story is not be perfectly authentic, the story flows well and and the illustrations are of good quality. It does contain some culturally accurate information and would be an excellent addition to a tasteful collecter's children's library.

A book that has haunted me for years!!,
By Diane E. Tichenor (Philadelphia, PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sootface (Paperback)
I am so excited to have found this book! I am 21 years old and my mother read this book to me once long ago when I was little. It has haunted me ever since that time over the years and I have wanted to find it again. I only was able to hear the story once and never again because my Mom bought it for children at a powwow and gave it to them. I am so glad I will have it again. I plan to read it once more and than give it to children at the school I'm teaching at so they can enjoy it, too. A great message and a lovely story! I would recommend it for girls between 4-10 years of age.

This review is from: Sootface (Paperback)
This Cinderella story is almost identical to The Rough Faced Girl. My fourth grade class really enjoyed it.

Good Book,

This book was a good Traditional tale. The pictures depicted the story clearly. My daughter enjoys the story and told me that it reminded her of Cinderella.

Aboringinal Education,
This review is from: Sootface (Turtleback School & Library Binding Edition) (School & Library Binding)
This is a great story for comparing all the "Cinderella" cultures in the world. It also leads to a wonderful teaching unit on Aboringinal customs and their way of life. Used extensively in primary grades.

A Nice Fable Which Emphasizes Virtue - a review of "Sootface",
This review is from: Sootface (Paperback)
This story is very much like the "Rough-Face Girl". And similar enough to a Cinderella story that most children will like it. Sootface (our Cinderella replacement) is still tormented by sisters, and there is still a "prince" who desires matrimony, but in this case he is a mysterious warrior who no one can see. He lives with his sister and one day he asks the sister to go to the village to tell the eligible girls that he will wed the one who can see him and say what his bow is made of.
The story itself is interesting enough, and I really like the strong emphasis that is place on virtue rather than beauty. However the reason I gave the book four stars is because of the artwork and the opportunities it provides to talk about how Native Americans used to live. I read this to my son and daughter and we talked about hunting and how the deer and elk provided pelts that were used for all sorts of things; everything from housing to shoes. We also digressed and talked about how hunting societies differ from agrarian ones. And all of this was easy to do as the artwork provided pictures of wigwams, dress, and decorations. The Accelerated Reading designation for this book 4.4, which means that it is generally suited for 4th Graders. Note on AR designation: The AR description is a general "guide" that rates books on a relative scale of difficulty. Children can certainly read at levels above or below their group range, so that this number should only be used as a aid to help choose books that are appropriate and not frustrating. Four Stars. [B-] ::: A nice story of a good and dutiful girl who's virtue and not her beauty earn her true love. In this version the sisters are lovely as well, but their mean nature precludes their success. The artwork is very nice, and the book is an okay read-aloud. The AR level is 4.4.

No native Cinderella's,
By
This review is from: Sootface (Paperback)
Sorry, but there are no cinderella's in the native world. Not in the way this story is portrayed. This is just one of several theme repeats the author is doing to make money. It is not representative of natives, and especially the Ojibwa. |
