5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful piece - be sure of what you are looking for

3.0 out of 5 stars Poorly Covered Butter Dish, December 2, 2007
This review is from: Sophie Conran by Portmeirion 6-Inch-by-4-3/4-Inch Covered Butter Dish, White (Kitchen)
I recently bought this beautiful Sophie Conran covered butter dish for myself. I was very dissappointed because although it is beautiful the cover does not have a rim to rest on so the cover does not fit properly. The cover rattles on the dish, appears to be warped and is easy to fall off of the dish. Also, I wanted a covered butter dish to protect my butter from picking up odors in the refridgerator. I also didn't want specks, cooking stuff like flour or pepper to get onto my butter. I would not buy this again if I had known how it was made.

My goal when selecting this dish was to reduce the butter mess which always got all over our traditional dish and cover. It did help that but didn't eliminate it (has more to do with the users than the dish!). It looks nice but the lid is poorly made. It is misshapen so doesn't fit very well at best, and when rotated around the other way fits quite poorly. This isn't a big deal, it does work, but should be better made for the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful piece - be sure of what you are looking for, January 8, 2009

I have had this butter dish and several other pieces from this range for about a year and absolutely love them all. The butter dish is probably my favourite simply because I see it most, it goes from counter to table and back and its aesthetic is so pleasing. I understand the other reviewers' comments but must add that this line is designed and manufactured to appear handmade, surely this is the reason we choose it? The lid does fit intentionally one way round but my young children are still able to use it without a problem.

The size and dimensions are typical of a European butter dish so it holds a block of butter comfortably and would take two US sticks also. It cleans well in the dishwasher and being porcelain it still looks brand new despite heavy family use.

The Sophie Conran range is marketed as good, resonably priced porcelain for freezer, oven and dishwasher and with its nice design I have found it perfect for our daily use. I would highly recommend it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Preposterous!, June 18, 2009
This review is from: Sophie Conran by Portmeirion 6-Inch-by-4-3/4-Inch Covered Butter Dish, White (Kitchen)
The point of purchasing a 'covered' butter dish is to 'cover' the butter - UTILITY! The extremely flimsy lid merely sits, precariously, on top of the pot; and only if turned in 1 direction. I was not expecting an airtight seal, but, the lid does not even lie edge-to-edge. There is plenty of room for the contaminating fridge air to funnel in - the butter turns in color & taste, poste haste! The design is so inherently flawed that one must 'hold' the lid in place when moving the pot, even slightly, else the lid will just slide/fly right off.

I mentioned the flimsiness of the lid. Please understand, if the edge so much as taps the counter (or, anything not soft), BAM it will break like shale. The same goes for the top edges of the pot. Again, the flawed design: the edges are tapered to near paper thinness.

If looking for utility, avoid the headache here!

1.0 out of 5 stars Cover does not fit correctly, December 31, 2010

I wish that I had read the reviews instead of just relying on the average rating. As another person mentioned, there is a design flaw and the cover does not have a snug spot to rest in the base. So the cover slips and slides, frequently falling off of the butter dish. I also am concerned that this non-snug fit does little to protect the butter inside. Since it was so cheap, the shipping would probably cost half of the return amount, so I will probably just chalk this up to a lesson learned.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful and Attractive, April 4, 2009

I like this butter dish quite a lot. We have Mikasa's Italian Countryside dinnerware Mikasa Italian Countryside 45-Piece Dinnerware Set, Service for 8 and while it is not an exact match (I'm glad it's not,) this butter dish looks nice with our dishes. I may get the Sophie Conran large salad bowl as well. The function of the butter dish is what initially attracted me. We keep our butter out on the counter top, which caused the covers on traditional butter dishes to get messy as we cover the soft butter. This dish keeps the butter in the deep receptacle, which can hold two sticks, and covers with the flat lid. The lid is NOT a tight fit and would slide off if tilted. It looks very nice out on my counter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice and unique, July 28, 2008

I like this butter dish - it's attractive and unique. A couple of things to note -- it doesn't "seal" tight - it's porcelain so it can't. But butter doesn't need to be sealed tight. Also, it's hard to tell from the photo but it's extra wide -- you could put two sticks of butter side by side in this dish. There just aren't great butter dish options out there -- they're all plastic and ugly. We use a lot of butter in our house, so it sits on the counter all the time. This one is at least attractive and unique.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible quality, December 27, 2010
This review is from: Sophie Conran by Portmeirion 6-Inch-by-4-3/4-Inch Covered Butter Dish, White (Kitchen)
It was love at first sight, this dih and me were made for each other - at least that's what I thought. But after having this dinnerware in my everyday use for over two years now, I have to say , I am sooo dissapointed by the poor quality.

It turned out to be not as strong as stated at all. This dinnerware grows brittly with time. In the first year, everything was just fine. But after that time of period, the pieces of this dinnerware really got ugly by:

-looses it's shiny surface
-very visible scratches even in the bowls which are just use with spoons ( and absolutely no knifes)
-in the china itselfs appear rosty stains, they developed over time, like something getting washed out
-the china does crack into pieces when used in a regular oven by 350°F, it obviously looses it's heat resistance

Needless to say that we are very dissapointed, since we paid good money for this dinnerware, just to find out that it is not at all useful.

It gets one star just for the really beatiful design, that I still love even after over two years. But I will not buy another single piece. Wouldn't even take it for free, because it is not fun when you're making a casserole and the dish cracks into two pieces in the oven...

Only thing would be the lid fitting better but I am guessing it may be due to being handmade. Still nice cuz it holds two sticks of butter.

This is beautiful quality for the price :) I bought it to replace my mother's porcelain dish that I had accidentally broken. I was unsure of how the quality would be based on the few negative reviews. I must say I am impressed and delighted. Thank you Sophie Conran!
