If you ever buy one album....,

BUY THIS ALBUM!!! If you love thought provoking, soul searching, emotional music, this album is for you. If you love innovation and creativity, this album is for you. If you love just good ole music to rock out to, this album is for you. Grandaddy is a combination of everything that is great in music. Thoughtful lyrics, beautiful melodies....these guys have it all. They're the best thing to come out of Modesto CA since George Lucas. This album is by far their greatest work. This box set is even better because you get several songs that were previously only available on singles. "Our dying brains" is perhaps one of my all time favorite songs. Every time I hear this album I hear something new that I love. Grandaddy can be compared to everyone from Radiohead to Sparklehorse but the fact remains, their are very much their own unique animal with a unique sound worth giving a little extra attention. If you're one of those people who complains about there not being any good music these days, buy this album and I think you'll be singing a different tune - a Grandaddy tune.

Wonderfully surreal,

This CD is beautiful. Even my 8 year old son enjoys "The Crystal Lake". Jed the Humanoid is a very moving song, even though it's about (of all things) a robot. I like the link to the second song about Jed's poems. Great , just great. I had a chance to see Grandaddy here in Atlanta and I was unable to make it to the show. I hope they can make it back to the Atlanta area soon.

This version of Software Slump comes with The Frosty Plate EP bonus disc, which I bought the second time I purchased the Slump album because I wanted to share the love. Basically this EP is truly worth shelling out the extra cash for this album, one of my favorite songs- Our Dying Brains (available as free download on Amazon[.com] as I have seen) is found here and definitely worth it alone. The other songs are on or off, but good nonetheless. Don't miss out on the EP if you get this album!!

Paranoid Android Meet Yoshima,
By CJ (Pawling, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sophtware Slump [Limited Edition with Bonus CD] (Audio CD)
If Yoshima stops battling robots long enough to notice the paranoid android sitting in a cage like a pig on antibiotics, Jed would be the fitter happier result of this union. While this album does have instrumental melodies reminiscent of Radiohead's OK Computer and vocals eerily similar to Flaming Lips' Coyne, it is an altogether distinct and exceptional work. The concept, while done many times before, does not become jaded in Grandaddy's hands. Jed is a Robot. The center of attention when created, but now above the "ice shelves and glaciers...treating water and waste at night" thinking about Hewlett's daughter. He has been forgotten. Left alone. Alienated. The CD is "peaked" intermittently with faster, more upbeat tracks like Hewlett's Daughter, Crystal Lake and Broken Household Appliance National Forest. The mood changes nicely throughout. The drum roll on Hewlett's daughter, at first listen seems intrusive but works it's way to being an integral part of the song - giving it its character. In all, the album is a superb piece combining melancholic melodies, upbeat ryhthms and poignant tragic comic lyrics. The Software Slump has the makings of a neat rock opera if given proper treatment.

You thought Gary Condit was the silliest thing from Modesto Cali? Naw. Grandaddy will take you to the MGM Grand and throw you off the patio, man. Imagine if Mercury Rev put away the bow saw and bought a cheap Casio keyboard. That's Grandaddy!!!! Rocak Rolla.

Dense, Beautiful and Original,

Grandaddy is very hard to describe. Take the rich instrumentation and production of Radiohead and add a healthy but subtle dose of humor ala the defunct Lincoln or They Might Be Giants. This is roughly a concept album, but each track stands alone as a great song. There is a nice balance of dark and light songs. You owe it to yourself to at least listen to the clips. As a disclaimer, I'm a musician, and this may be one of those "musician's albums" that only we understand. :-)

Extremely Original,

One thing that I love Grandaddy for is that they're quite original.I bought this album after I saw them live with Coldplay (not quite as orignal, but quality is there) and I thought that they were excellent, a little too much distortion live, but excellent. Grandaddy uses some electronic sounding music in this album, but quite little, not enough to drive non-electronic lovers insane and enough to please those who do enjoy it now and then. The guitars are excellent and the members of Grandaddy are quite fine young musicians. The singing is quite good as well, can't really compare it to anything. Live they sound like Radiohead-albums, but on they're CD, im not really sure how to explain they're style, certainly not art-rock nor Brit-rock, inbetween i suppose. Overall, quite original and quite imaginative, lets give them a round of applause! |
