A decent translation of more-than-decent poetry,
By
This review is from: Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz: poemas (Paperback)
Peden's English aims more at preserving the poetic feel of Sor Juana's work than at providing a word-by-word (or even stanza-by-stanza) translation. For this reason, the fact that the original poems are printed in Spanish on the page adjacent to each English translation proves helpful--especially if you can read some Spanish--in grasping the true gist of Sor Juana's verses.
This is just a small selection of the translator's favorite poems by this immensely fascinating 17th-century Mexican nun, but it is enough to give the reader a taste of Sor Juana's incredible genius. The images and word-plays she employs to explore issues of gender, religion, beauty, knowledge, vocation, et cetera are unique and moving and well worth the reader's time and consideration.
