Not enough magic,
By Norway Mom (Oslo area) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Sorcerer's Apprentice Junior Novel (Junior Novelization) (Paperback)
I read this book aloud for my boys aged 8-1/2 and 12. We had not seen the movie before we read the book. In short, their opinion was: "Too much romance, too much talk, not enough magic." Several evenings they requested other books, and I practically had to force them to listen to the rest of the book.
It was definitely not a page-turner. There are about 8 pages of color pictures in the center of the book, but even the pictures didn't have much action. We were disappointed in the book.

This review is from: The Sorcerer's Apprentice Junior Novel (Junior Novelization) (Paperback)
This is a slightly abridged novelization of a too-short movie, so don't expect a lot of detail or depth. It's been a long time since I was in the target audience range (9-12 yrs.) so I can't say how well the young 'uns would like it. I bought it as a supplement to the movie, since it was the only written story available, and it serves that purpose adequately, if not splendidly. What I'd really like would be a full-length (adult, that is) novelization, filling in a lot of information that was left out of the movie. This version does help with that, at least a little.
Take into account the book's target audience, forgive a few spelling errors, linger over the eight pages of movie stills, and you should be able to enjoy this novelization. Yes, there are a few discrepancies between it and the movie, but nothing that changes the story. I'ts a quick, easy read. If you liked the movie, you'll probably like the book.
