Rabin At His Best. A Soaring Action Score With An Unexpected Emotional Side To It,
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sorcerer's Apprentice (MP3 Download)
Trevor Rabin's scores are unmistakable and are incredibly fun. With The Sorcerer's Apprentice I honestly believe Rabin has delivered his best score in quite some time. With Jerry Bruckheimer producing and John Turteltaub directing I'm sure he felt right at home.
The Sorcerer's Apprentice lets Rabin flex his action muscles like we haven't heard in a while. He is able to balance some light fun cues with some incredibly grand and intense ones. The album opens with an appropriate homage to the Dukas piece from Fantasia and then a pretty big homage to Hans Zimmer. I don't know exactly why Jack Sparrow's theme is blatantly in the first track, but it is and I loved it. Rabin's familiar arrangements flourish with stunning thematic material and get backed with a chorus on occasion. The main theme echoes in almost every cue giving this score its identity. Percussion, riffing guitars and pulsing strings keep the adrenaline level high. Yes, there were moments in this score that got the hairs on the back of my neck standing on end, which I didn't expect. "The Urn" and "Car Chase" are two standout cues that bleed Trevor Rabin and are incredible. Think what you want about the movie and all, but the score itself is a true delight and will please Rabin fans immensely. Toss this one up with Armageddon as one of his most memorable action scores. Like Armageddon it is heavy on the action cues with an epic quality, but has a fair amount of emotion laced into it. I think you'll be surprised as to how invested you will become with this score as you listen through it. One thing that I notice about the film composers I love is how they strive in simplicity, and Trevor Rabin is no exception. The melodies and tunes are simple and if that composer is talented then those simple tunes will have an enormous emotional effect. The score will also take the film it's accompanying and make it soar.

Its A Kind Of Magic,
By John Green "Darkwriter" (Brooklyn, NY USA) - See all my reviews (TOP 1000 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Sorcerer's Apprentice (MP3 Download)
Sorcerer's Apprentice by Trevor Rabin is a fun piece of work. The soundtrack features lots of smooth jazz-style rhythm guitar sometimes done in a faux-flamenco style and mostly used for the more romantic and quieter moments. And there are lots of good, haunting vocal chants and percussions lending a gothic ambience to the music, and it sounds pretty good.
The two most notable cues on the cd are Balthazar's motif- an 8-note rapid electric cello theme, briefly paused on the 5th note (1-2-3-4-5...6-7-8)- and Dave's motif- a dramatic trombone set that rises in intensity, mostly used when he does magic. Some highlights: Sorcerer's Apprentice- A light, almost whimsical tune. Features the classic oboe refrain from the seminal piece and some choral chants for added depth. At :45 comes a very under-utilized jig & reel transition. Dave Revives Balthazar- Mainly focused on the smooth guitar, first at :18 to set the mood then returning at 1:48 to underscore the denouement. The Urn- At :22 the trombone breaks in followed by ghostly female chorus. Good heavy percussion carries Horvath's release from the enchanted Urn. At 1:10 comes in the 8-note electric cello motif mentioned above with more chants and percussion as Balthazar manages his escape from it as well. A nice tone is set here. Morgana Fight- Choral chant intro with strings continues until :54 when the Balthazar motif returns on electric cello. More rhythm rock guitar appears supported by some riffs in the background. At 1:38 it reverts back to the familiar haunting vocals and pounding percussion with horns. Walk in the Rain- Very enjoyable, lightly comical smooth jazz piece that's tragically way too short (less than a minute). Car Chase- Balthazar's motif on electric cello with rock guitar underneath until :36 when it also plays on guitar, supported by chant. At :51 it switches to a four-beat heavy percussion with guitar riff before going back to rushing strings, but the guitar remains underneath. The 8-noter returns at 1:18 on cello and guitar. Four-beat percussion/guitar returns at 2:00, switches to an alternate version with stronger chants before transiting into a different tempo with higher strings and horns. At 3:00 the more menacing themes come in for Horvath before closing out on Balthazar again. Only real downside is you can hear some rough transition edits along the way, like in the old days when they spliced tape. Bull Fight- Not very memorable until the 1:13 mark where the chants really kick in to got with the sticks, drums and trombone. Switches tempo a couple of times before ending with a flurry of action. Fantasia Original Demo- Good to hear Rabin playing around with the original themes, getting the feel of it all. Has a kinda sinister opening before switching to the classic oboes and motifs and mixing it together with his own cues. Too much going on in this one to talk about; you need to hear it all for yourself. Sorcerer's Apprentice is more fun than the actual movie and it came off much better than I thought it would. And as my first Trevor Rabin soundtrack, it makes me want to hear more of his work. Can't beat that.

The shadow of Zimmer,
By John Xisor "John Xisor" (Coruscant) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sorcerer's Apprentice (MP3 Download)
thats what it is. The hint to the original fantasian sorcerer's apprentice is a nice clue but hearing the jack sparrow theme in the main title it is not. rabin try, but he can't step out the giant shadow of his master Hans Zimmer. please trevor rabin, if you write scores for a million $ production, try write new good music not copy stuff from another composer, that's crap.
