Almost great,

I just completed Sorcerors and found it greatly interesting. Needleman's character is much like Hesse's Sinclair or Goldman in both psychological development and internal dialogue. It plays on the edge of fantasy and works with the lure of what attracts us to magic tricks. Several characters were intriguing but had a somewhat stilted development. The narcissism of the protagonist prevented the 'intrusion' of the egos of the other characters and left the book a little flat. The main hook, a character named Irene, was built up well and could have made a spectacular ending but instead an inexplicably banal ending occurred instead. It greatly diminished the overall delight in several of the other sections. Too bad. Needleman is my current favorite philosopher. I am working through his book The American Soul and find it to be very good. I teach a class on the Transcendentalists and this book complements it well.
