1891. Illustrated by incantations, specimens of medical magic, anecdotes, tales. This work was published when the author was nearly seventy years of age. It represents twenty years' collecting of spells, customs, ceremonies, superstitions, fetishes, exorcisms, incantations and usages gathered from living sources throughout America, Europe and the East, as well as from the works of earlier writers, all among the Gypsies, as regards to fortune telling, witch doctoring, love philtering and other sorcery. It is illustrated by many anecdotes and instances, taken either from the works as yet very little known to the English reader, or from personal experiences.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

"Illustrated by numerous incantations, specimens of medical magic, anecdotes and tales," this classic 19th-century treatise on the secret wisdom of the enigmatic European Gypsies is essential reading for all students of comparative mythology.

The author, a renowned folklorist and president of the Gypsy-Lore Society, explores Gypsy belief and practices and places them in the context of global shamanistic tradition, discussing:

* the origins of witchcraft * vindictive and mischievous magic * charms and conjurations * Hungarian gypsy spells * pregnancy charms and folklore * love potions * Romanian and Transylvania gypsy lore * fortune telling * gypsy amulets * and much more.

This replica of the original 1891 edition is complete with Leland's beautifully evocative drawings and diagrams. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

About the Author

American journalist and folklorist CHARLES GODFREY LELAND (1824-1903) was editor of Continental Monthly during the Civil War and coined the term emancipation as an alternative to abolition, but he is best remembered for his books on ethnography, folklore, and language, including The Gypsies (1882), The Hundred Riddles of the Fairy Bellaria (1892), and Aradia: Gospels of the Witches (1899). --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars esoteric classic, March 20, 2008
I can't believe no one has reviewed this classic work of theosophy, anthropology, hypnotism, mediumship, psychology and occultism...
so let me make a few brief notes...
A learned 19th century work of european witchcraft, shamanism. spiritism and occultism...it belongs in the library of every serious student...
the core of the book is chapter xi on gypsy witchcraft where the author enters fully into a discussion of the "trance state" and the methodologies used by european "folk doctors" etc...for entering the "other world"...so to speak...
leland studied under those who knew and practiced the "old faith" and he combines this with the erudition of a fine scholar...
very valuable resource...and a great read !

1.0 out of 5 stars "Gypsy" Sorcery? Are you serious?!, September 19, 2010

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Gypsy Sorcery and Fortune Telling (Paperback)
This is one of those books that should go over to the fiction section as quickly as possible as it's little more than a make believe; a 'history' of Lelands concepts of Gypsy ritual and society.

This book does little to clarify the complexity of Gypsy (Romani, Sinti, Kalderash, etc...) society and culture, but rather plays up to an age old exoticism of and futher alienation of this group of people from society, and society from them.

Leland's "Gypsy Lore Society" was pretty much a group of middle to upper class white men (and women) who spent their days (mis)appropriating a culture they could barely understand. It's time this was debunked and demystified.

If you want a book of fanciful 'sorcery' and imagery, then sure, get a copy of this book, if you want to understand Gypsies and Travellers, don't look here.
