1.0 out of 5 stars A truly disappointing read!
I have to tell you, this has to be one of the most lackluster books I've ever read. The characters lacked development. The whole "true" story lacked real substance. I struggled to finish because the story just doesn't flow well.

I agree, this book should have focused more on the young ladies bonding than their relationships with men. I knew fully what...

TJ has done a fine job at her first attempt as an author and I can't wait to read additional books from her. Her characters are well developed and the storyline is interesting in Sorority Girls. Sorority Girls was a page turner and I read the book in one day! No matter whether you're Greek or Non-Greek, any sister can relate to this book as it deals with friendship and female-bonding. Highly recommend to anyone and I don't think you will be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sophistication at It's Best, November 28, 1999
By
Cinnamon Butler (University of Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sorority Sisters (Hardcover)
Ms. Tajuana Butler has done the public a favor by gracing us with the book "Sorority Sisters". This past weekend I read the book while I was home for the Thanksgiving holidays. I am currently a sophomore at the University of Kentucky and am considering pledging a sorority. Yet, the book goes so much deeper than the process of pledging. It displays the everyday, real-life struggles of 5 college women and how they choose to deal with this while they are in college. Even though my time was limited over the break I always seemed to find the time to pick up from where I left off whenever I put the book down (whether it be before going to bed, in the bathroom, or on the phone). I feel that I can relate to so many of the incidents that occur in the book. You can tell that Ms. Butler spent a great deal of time researching the college atmosphere and college life in general. Upon my return from the holidays I told several friends about the book and all of them are dying to read it. I would like information on purchasing several copies and would like to know how I could contact Ms. Butler to tell her what a fine job she has done. I look forward to the next book. P.S. The "Desires of a Woman" was also very inspiring. Keep up the good work. Thank you, A huge Fan

4.0 out of 5 stars This book captures the true essence of Black Greek life., February 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Sorority Sisters (Hardcover)
Tajuana Butler has managed to capture the often misunderstood mystique of Black Greek college life in her first novel. Her tales of the 5 linesisters: Cajen, Tiara, Stephanie, Malena, and Chancey are told with a vivid sense of depth and reality. This book is simply a must for anyone who has pledged a black fraternity or sorority. It will also prove to be enlightening for anyone interested in crossing the "burning sands" into any of the historic NPHC Greek letter organizations. Reading Sorority Sisters, often caused me to reflect back on the seemingly impossible ordeals I faced as a "Scroller" of K-A-Psi back in the good ol' days. This sister has truly shared some very worth while experiences that many readers will undoubtfully enjoy. TJ's stories are told with unyielding passion and a meticulous flair for detail. Keep up the good work lady. . .your talent is very evident!

I have to tell you, this has to be one of the most lackluster books I've ever read. The characters lacked development. The whole "true" story lacked real substance. I struggled to finish because the story just doesn't flow well.

I agree, this book should have focused more on the young ladies bonding than their relationships with men. I knew fully what sorority these young ladies were pledging and I was irritated by the (early on) over-emphasis to the girls' beauty (that plays into the stereotype regarding this sorority).

I understand Ms. Butler's sorority affiliation, but it would have done her well to be more neutral in her book. I'm NOT in her sorority and frankly, felt nauseated and alienated by her bias towards her organization.

And to think, I was going to buy this book for my sands as an anniversary gift. I'm glad I read it first!

4.0 out of 5 stars CALLING all Sorors!, June 16, 2000
This review is from: Sorority Sisters: A Novel (Hardcover)
This book was very entertaining regardless of what sorority you are in, it pertains to us all. Needless to say by my on-line name, which one I represent! The book was light and easy to read despite the small error on page 181! I really enjoyed it and hope that all Sorors can stick together regardless of which sorority they are with.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but very simplistic, January 12, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Sorority Sisters (Hardcover)
I enjoyed the book as I am looking to rush soon myself so I got some insight into the pledging experience. However the appearance and language of the book was very elementary, I finished it within 3 hours (taking quite a few breaks) and the ending was quite dissapointing. But overall I feel more confident about what to expect if i do make it "on-line"

1.0 out of 5 stars I've read better--MUCH BETTER!, August 5, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Sorority Sisters: A Novel (Hardcover)
I felt like I was reading a pre-teen novel. The characters were very underdeveloped, she spent more time on the characters' sex lives instead of their sisterhood, and she spends a lot of time on their physical apprearance. It does not take a genius to figure out what sorority she is talking about. She makes the characters seem like a sorority is the answer to everything. They are trying to cope with major struggles in their lives but as long as they get into their sorority everything will be okay. Oh please! Ms. Butler obviously has some sort of identity crisis herself if she makes her characters this shallow! I would not recommend this book to anyone!

1.0 out of 5 stars Easy Read....That's It!!!!, May 20, 2005

I would have to agree with Shamontie. The dialogue and the visuals are terrible!!! I felt as though I was force-feeding myself trying to read this book. I write myself so I know how a visual should be presented. She tells us everything and leaves nothing to the imagination. I still can't really tell you how any of the characters look. There is nothing really memorable about her descriptions. Those who say some of the events were not true to life are lying or in denial. I sure hope her econd book is much better. I do congratulate her on following her dreams.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Enjoyment, October 11, 2000
This review is from: Sorority Sisters: A Novel (Hardcover)
Don't get me wrong, I read this entire book in a few days -- taking time out for work of course. I must admit, as a graduate of an HBCU, I saw many of my friends in some of this. But, while this novel was truly entertaining, I never really felt like the characters were well developed, or that they had really come to terms with their problems or how they would deal with them. For example, for years Stephanie has somehow felt unworthy of her social position, a position that she has gained through her parents' association. I can't imagine how pledging a sorority will make a permanent, positive change in her self-esteem as it relates to her social status. Also, just little things irked me, like how loving line sisters could auction off a man that has given one of their own an STD. Just does not compute for me. Maybe because Ms. Butler was concentrating on developing five characters instead of just one or two, some potentially serious discussions were just touched.

At any rate, if you are looking for something to read on a wintery or dreary weekend, or something light, pick this up. It's worth the chuckle.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok Book but needs more development, June 14, 2000
By
MissE (Houston, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sorority Sisters (Hardcover)
My best friend is a member of the sorority that Ms. Butler referenced. She loaned me the book. It was a good story and I liked it. However, I felt that the characters could have been developed more. I like to be able to read a book and feel like I know everything about the character. Like they were my friends. But I didn't recieve that from this book. She gives enough detail about each person to give you somewhat of a picture of them. It was enough to keep me reading. I would read another novel by Ms. Butler if she goes into more in depth detail about her characters.
