4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Sampling of McCarty w/Live Cut, April 22, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Sorry Entertainer (Audio CD)
Singer/songwriter/guitarist Kathy McCarty helped make her former band Glass Eye one of the most interesting, if not commercially successful bands to come out of the Austin, Texas music scene. When they disbanded in 1993, McCarty decided to record an entire album (Dead Dog's Eyeball) dedicated to the songs of another local favorite, Daniel Johnston. Johnston's songs possess the honesty and pain of the blues and the charm of the best pop music. Most of his recordings, done on a boom-box with crude piano, guitar and even chord organ, are primitive while his songs range from sophisticated to almost child-like. Because of Johnston's continuing battle with mental illness, it was unsure if he would ever record again. Being both a friend and a fan, McCarty decided to record Eyeball as a "labor of love."

Sorry Entertainer is a seven-song EP featuring three songs from Dead Dog's Eyeball (Sorry Entertainer, Rocket Ship, and a terrific previously unavailable live version of The Creature), as well as interpretations of three other Daniel Johnston tunes, and a cut from McCarty's former band Glass Eye. Any of the new Johnston material would fit nicely on Dead Dog's Eyeball, but only Love Wheel can hold its own with the best tracks. Fans of Glass Eye will enjoy the addition of Exodus Song (not included on either of their hard-to-find late 80's recordings), although it seems to detract from the cohesiveness of the record as a whole. - Brett Hartenbach, All Music Guide

5.0 out of 5 stars This CD is visceral and folky., October 13, 1998

This review is from: Sorry Entertainer (Audio CD)
I love this CD. It is very short but I have had it on heavy rotation for the last couple of months. Its fun and its sad and you can dance to it and you can sing out loud to it. I heard about it from some friends from West Virginia and I am so glad that I did. Kathy McCarty is from Glass Eye so that is my next stop on this musical journey. My favorite songs are love wheel and sorry entertainer. If you like folky music that isn't too folky and a little more rocking but you don't want to hear it as background music for the next breakup scene from Melrose Place then get this CD.
