This is one of the most beautiful CD's I own. Although all cover songs, John Grant's voice and unique styling make them all his own. I highly recommend this even if your just a casual fan who has only heard one or two songs from this great band, you'll really enjoy this collection. These songs seem to have a general theme among them, especially the first few tracks, which anyone who listens to the lyrics will know what I mean. Whatever your sexuality though, you are bound to find this great chill out songs, cozy fireplace listening, and just something to truly treasure. Let's hope this great band from Denver, CO continue to make beautiful music. Well done!

In early 2007, I was at a record store, listening to cds, trying to find something that struck me. Just for fun, I grabbed a tribute cd to Tim Buckley, that had a cover of "Song To The Siren", with the This Mortal Coil version haunting me since several years. When I heard John Grant deliver his version, a tear fell. Although it wasn't until a year later that I got around to getting any of The Czar's records. The first one I heard was "Goodbye" which I really liked. Still, his version of "Song To The Siren" was always in the back of my head and I didn't want to buy the Tim Buckley cd just for that.
Then I heard of this release. I heard a few of the other tracks on the Internet and that was enough to convince me to get it. I'm really happy that I did because this is the best Czars record I've heard. I realize that they are all covers, but musical artists are not just writers, but singers. I'm sure Grant thinks of himself as a singer/musician first, then a writer. Besides, these songs stay true to the overall lost/melancholy feeling I've heard on other Czar recordings. "Angel Eyes" and that really long version of "My Funny Valentine" with extra words from a previous Czars song are particularly good. I found it really satisfying that Grant sang songs such as "Angel Eyes" "Where The Boys Are" "Black is the Colour" and "Strange". I would even go as far to say that John Grant has the most beautifully heartbreaking male voice that I have heard. It's a shame more people are unaware of the existance of this group. I heard they disbanded, but I think I read that John Grant is still making music. Let's hope that's true. Great stuff.

This band needs a lot more attention! This album is one of the best I've heard in a long time. John Grant, the singer, can sing with the greatest vocalists. The accompaniment on this album is spare and yet perfect. First time I've ever heard someone sing 'For Emily' as well as Art Garfunkel. Thanks to Rebel Rebel on Bleeker St. for bringing this to my notice, once again!
