Editorial Reviews

From Kirkus Reviews

Through a blend of literary devices, in competent, artistic prose, Chastain vividly portrays her character's self-doubt and bravery, as well as the unpredictable world in which she lives...Chastain's searing and emotional look at intimate-partner violence is often heartbreaking, riveting, and terrifying. "A heartfelt, unflinchingly honest account of a complex relationship."

Excellently written this book is about a woman in an abusive relationship who becomes gravely ill with cancer and ends up alone. I couldn't put it down because I wanted to make sure she was okay. A perfect example of abusive relationships where the victim tries to fix everything and comes up short. She doesn't ask for much but her husband won't give her any help at all. She finally finds it in her to stand up to him and he leaves her. While she is devastated it ends up being the best thing for her. I can't wait for Ms. Chastain's next book.

Deborah Giavonni Chastain is an amazing author who captivates her readers drawing them into her story to the point they feel they are reliving her testimony about her life with an abusive husband and her corageous battle with cancer. A must read!

I was gifted this book by a neighbor of the author's mother, with whom I live as a travel nurse. When I began the book, I initially was bored with what I thought was excess verbiage. Afterall, the typical reader isn't versed in such these endless adjectives, and even I needed a dictionary to decipher some of them. Then the author gets past detailing how wonderful "Mr Wonderful" is and shows me what a writer she is. I was riveted and was right there with her as she nailed it! She described the horrifying contol by this monster, the vilification, the forced isolation, and finally the cruelty as she faced her own mortality. Every woman who feels that they are not an equal in a relationship should read this book. Those of us who KNOW we were are indebted to the author for her revelation, because we are not alone, when we surely felt we were.

SORRY I WAS NO FUN AT THE CIRCUS, a book of love, hope, fear and the inner workings of a woman's mind. The author tells a true story of her self discovery, and what one goes through and comes out with, when faced with many challenges; a less than ideal man, the struggles of being a woman in society today and the daunting effects cancer, as well as it's treatment can bring. Deborah Chastain bares it all in this gripping book, a must read for anyone suffering within their own lives and looking to find a sense of belonging, in a world where, at the drop of a hat... you can find your world spinning out of control. Feeling isolated within yourself and the demons we all must face, read this book and know you are not alone.

The Author captivates the reader with the first sentence. This book tells the story of the Author who struggles to survive an abusive relationship and is diagnosed with Breast Cancer. She eloquently writes this story in away that helps you understand the difficult and heart wrenching journey of being in an abusive relationship and the toll it takes on the human spirit. This is a must read for anyone who works in Social Services.

This book was simply and beautifully written. There were parts that made me sob out loud. I sat down and read the book until I was done at 4 a.m. The author pulled together a diverse education combining Philosophy, Religion, Family, Psychology and the school of hard knocks. As a Physician, reading this book helped me to understand an abuse victim from the victim's perspective. I have known a number of women out there involved in Co-dependent relationships, and like the author, each of them feels very alone. I would recommend this book to family and friends of victims of co-dependency and domestic violence, as well as the victims themselves - but also to anyone looking for a very good read.

I just finished this lovely written book. Being a avid reader I so enjoy the wonderful use of the English language. Although I found myself full of much anxiety as I worried about the character, I was anxious to keep reading so I could make sure she was ok. The main character is in an abusive, controlling relationship with the man she loves. She like so many obsessive people, tries undaunted to "fix" the relationship all the while allowing her own spirit to be killed. And at the same time, she finds herself with cancer. He....will not be the supportive man she needs, yet she goes on to find strength in herself.
