One time when I was in college, I asked one of my friends how she had arranged the books she had on display. They didn't seem to be arranged at random, but I couldn't figure out how the subjects of adjacent books were related. She told me that she arranged them by color. The author (or maybe "the artist" is more accurate) had the idea of arranging books in such a way so as to express a coherent thought by reading the titles in order. Several of these are brilliant:

Primitive Art
Just Imagine
Picasso
Raised by Wolves

others are clever:

Sixteen Americans
Death and Disasters
12 Americans

others are evidence of patiently searching until the right combination was found:

A Short Guide to Writing About Art
Criticizing Photographs
This is Not a Photograph

or

History of the Universe
Great Balls of Fire
The First World
The Cell
Signifying Monkey
Civilization and its Discontents

others are succinct:

What is Art?
Close Observation

or

The Art of Conversation
Listen Listen Listen

while others are poignant:

Indian History for Young Folks
Our Village
Your National Parks

The "author" (collector?) in each case limited herself to the available titles in specific private collections. There is a section composed of Swedish books, and another of older books displaying their beautiful covers instead of the spines. Inevitably, there are a few duds, but the author gets credit for coming up with a new way of deconstructing art, since the authors of the books used surely did not intend for their titles to be used in this way. This collection of what ultimately amounts to photographs is amusing, thought-provoking, and impressive.

During April (National Poetry Month) my local library held a Book Spine Poetry Contest. At the time, I had never heard of such a genre but, once I found out about it, I was instantly hooked and began scouring my (and my friends') bookshelves for likely material to compose my own poems. The results were odd but strangely satisfying.

Only later did I learn that Ms. Katchadourian was the originator of this form of poetry, some twenty years ago. Hats off to her. I think this technique would be an excellent way to introduce poetry writing to young people (or to anyone daunted by the idea of composing a poem from scratch).

In addition to many handsome photographs of these unique poems, there is illuminating introductory text by Ms. Katchadourian and by British author Brian Dillon.

I'm very glad to have this book on my shelf. My only quibble might be that I prefer the term "book spine poetry" to "sorted books."

This is an interesting study of books - not their contents, but their covers and titles. Nina Katchadouian presents photographs of books she has sorted out, mostly by title - making sentences. There is also a section of books titled in her native Swedish language and then a section picked for their covers.

She makes sentences from the book titles and then arranges and photographs them. So we wind up with displays such as: Macbeth/trust me/you are not the target/for whom the bells tolls and Leonardo da Vinci as a musician/tone deaf and all thumbs.

This would make an interesting study on the physicality of books; a perfect gift for book lovers and even photographers.
