This is described as having a relaxing effect. It has also been noted to help people with depression when nothing else would work.
As a person diagnosed with PTSD and having been in a major depression, I can't say that this relaxed me as much as it woke me up. No jitteriness as many stimulants that I'd use to try to wake up would do to me.
I am definitely more focused and things just seem more balanced since I've been using this.
The relief of my depression actually is like a euphoria. I feel like I haven't felt since I was a kid. It's really great and really works. It is also good for the skin, whatever that's worth to you.
The alpha-stim is a device like this that requires an Rx, though I think this one goes higher in intensity
[...] has the results of some research done on CES
biomedcentral also has studies on using CES for depression. I'll edit this review when I find that link
you can also make your own CES if you know anything about electronics. The directions are at a site called redcircuits. Anyway, this device is excellent all around. I am thankful to have come across it

This little device has really helped me deal with anxiety and depression. The last year has been a rough one. It started when an unfortunate combination of money, relationship, family, deaths in the family, children and work stresses all peaked at the same time last summer. The result was a level of anxiety and unhappiness I had never experienced in over fifty years of life.
I was determined to get out of the hole I found myself in so I basically tried anything and everything I could. I had made a lot of progress, but was still having ups and downs and I felt vulnerable to a relapse. After learning about CES, researching it and becoming satisfied that at the least it wasn't dangerous, I purchased and began using the Bio Tuner two months ago.
Within the first few days my sleeping patterns began to improve. I had almost forgotten how great it feels to actually have a deep and restful sleep. During the first month of use I also observed a gradual easing of my anxiety levels and improvement in my level of happiness. Both of these improvements continued in the second month to the point that I am now often relatively relaxed and happy most of the time. This despite a continuation of many of the original stressors.
To be thorough I must say that while using the Bio Tuner I have continued to practice mindfulness based stress reduction meditation. The Bio Tuner seems to potentiate the positive effects of mediation and vice versa. I am not sure if the results would have been as positive without the meditation, but I suspect it still would have been effective. The reason for this belief is that my nineteen year old son began using the Bio Tuner over a month ago without meditation and he has experienced a very noticeable improvement in mood as well as increased mental clarity.

Verified Purchase
I have been reading about Bob Beck for years and have always wanted to try the Bio Tuner but the cost was too high. When the cost fell significantly I decided to give it a try. Similar "black box" devices have been used to help in addiction recovery. I mainly purchased it to help out with anxiety, depression, and pain, and for meditation. The technology of this device is called Cranial Electrical Stimulation, or CES and is referred to in these books: MegaBrain Power by Michael Hutchison; SuperLearning 2000 by Sheila Ostrander and Lynn Schroeder; and Hooked? NET: The new approach to drug cure by Meg Patterson.

The Unit:
There are two electrodes that clip to the ears and deliver an electrical impulse of multiple frequencies which are supposed to be beneficial for the brain. There are six settings for the frequency which is Pulse-Width Selectable (550uS [modes 1-3] and 220uS [modes 4-6). It can be set for continuous output (modes 1 and 4), One second on/one second off (modes 2 and 5) and 7.83 Hz Schumann (Earth Frequency) modulated (modes 3 and 6). Unfortunately the manufacturer provides no information as to the effects of each setting so the user is left on her own to experiment. Some of the reported benefits are: Improved mood, better sleep, improved memory, creativity, learning, and intelligence. Some people supposedly report lucid dreaming and old memories resurfacing.

The Experience:
The device is easy enough to use and the mild electrical impulse is felt on the earlobes where the electrodes are attached. I usually turn it up to where the tingling can be felt quite a bit and then turn it down slightly. The unit can be easily slipped into a pocket so you can move about during the session. It has a timer so it goes into sleep mode after 20 minutes.
