1.0 out of 5 stars Should probably bundle it with a diffuser
This is a gorgeous product and one I was very happy to receive.

Unfortunately the base cracked the very first time I used it, even though I seasoned and used it according to the instructions.

The instructions say a diffuser is "recommended" for stovetop use. I think this should be upgraded to "required" and a diffuser sold with the tagine...

I recently purchased this at a gourmet grocery store in their culinary arts section. I contacted the maker (Souk Ceramique) and received an email right away. They told me that it does not have a hole because it is a hand-thrown clay piece. The manufactured ones need holes because their tops sit on their bases tightly and the hole is necessary for steam to vent. In a hand-thrown tagine, the steam can vent around the base. Also, to season it - soak it overnight in water. Then allow it to dry, coat the inside with olive oil, and put in a cold oven. Heat the oven to 350 degrees and allow the tagine to heat with it and then leave it for an hour and a half to two hours in there. Don't put it in cold water while it is hot. Let it cool down on its own. If it isn't used often, it should be re-seasoned every few months. I've read variations on the seasoning, but that is the best that I can find for now (some said soak it for one hour in water - other sites said 4 hours). I was impressed by the prompt and helpful reply from customer service, and I like the product. The company truly tries to keep the old world alive through its authentic tagines.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great Tajine for safe cooking, April 23, 2008
This is a light weight tajine that cooks food perfectly. I use mine several times a week. Easy clean up and looks great on the kitchen counter.

This is a gorgeous product and one I was very happy to receive.

Unfortunately the base cracked the very first time I used it, even though I seasoned and used it according to the instructions.

The instructions say a diffuser is "recommended" for stovetop use. I think this should be upgraded to "required" and a diffuser sold with the tagine.

At the very least the manufacturer should mention a diffuser as a strongly recommended accessory in the description of this product here on the website. I would certainly have purchased and used one if only I had known.

5.0 out of 5 stars first try a success, July 3, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I purchased my tagine a few months ago and wasnt sure I made the right choice after reading more about temperatures and diffusers. But I persevered, bought a copper diffuser as I was determined to prepare a moroccan meal. I love lamb. I found the spanish saffron in local grocery stores and took out the cookbook. By now I had to re-season the tagine, soaking and oiling the inside. I combined a few recipes from the little book that was recommended. I seasoned and browned the meat first. I put a little oil in the tagine with onion and garlic, a pinch of the saffon and just enough water to cover the meat. Medium for an hr and half. Then some zucchini and red bell pepper for about another 45 min. Topped with roasted shelled pistachio nuts and pitted kalamata olives. OMG. The sweat delicate aroma of the saffron- amazing. The meat was like budder. Now to find Moroccan wine on long Island. I bought the 9x9in diffuser.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product, excellent service, September 13, 2009

This review is from: Le Souk Ceramique CT-BUR-12 12-Inch Cookable Tagine, Burgundy (Kitchen)
I bought two tagines: one burgundy and one green from Le Souk Ceramique.
First of all, the service is personable and efficient. Doug was patient and gracious and solved the small issue that came up during shipping.
As for the products themselves - great! I cooked several tagines by now - all very good and easy. I seasoned the tagines and they worked great. I also bought heat dispensers so that I can use the tagines on the stove top.
The fact that the tagines themselves are so beautiful makes them a pleasure to use and, more so, to have them display at a Moroccan dinner party, with some yummy recipes that come with the tagines.
The tagines and buying them from Le Souk Ceramique - overall, a very pleasant experience!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful experience all around, January 2, 2008

From start to finish, this has been a great experience. Although weather influenced shipping, LeSouk , the shipper, kept me informed. To make up for the delay, they included an extra product free of charge. The tagine I ordered is wonderful. Follow the care directions, and you should have succulent treats. Word of caution. Because it is made of clay, do not put directly on heat. I used a cast iron fry pan upside down to diffuse heat and to eliminate hair line cracks. The tagine is decorative and a bit exotic looking. All in all a welcome addition to my kitchen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tagine.. yellow?, November 30, 2005

The previous reviewer did not season her tajine.. which slowly builds up the strength of the clay.. you may use on electric cook tops but make sure the temp is BELOW 350. I prefer the regular one with glaze.

4.0 out of 5 stars Black Tagine, June 7, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
So far I have used this tagine twice. The food has been wonderful. I use it with a Bella copper diffuser (which is excellent) on the stove top at settings around 2 - 3. I seasoned the tagine nefore use in accordance with the instructions and so far so good. There were a couple of cracking noises during cooking the second time but the tagine appears undamaged. The food tastes great - it could be done using a crock pot as easily but the presentation of the tagine is more appealing.
3/28/2011 Update. The tagine is still going strong. It still gets used a lot and has not cracked. I still use the diffuser which is possibly key to keeping the tagine from cracking.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth it!, October 1, 2009

I am very pleased with the tagine. It works well to slow cook food and makes for an excellent, authentic presentation. My dinner guests have been delighted. I seasoned the clay tagine exactly as instructed, I use a diffuser and so far have had no problem whatsoever. The only drawback is that it is too small to prepare a dinner for more than 6-7. But the craftmanship and food preparation are superb.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tagine,if you please, September 14, 2009
After preparing the tagine, like you would prepare a good dutch oven we have used it frequently for tantalizing dishes not only from the Middle East but for some adaptions to Western dishes as well. It cooks evenly and the flavors intermingle in such a way that you know they are there but none are overwhelming. It also has easy clean up!
