4.0 out of 5 stars It's been quite a while!, August 12, 2005
By
This review is from: Le Souk Sunday Sessions (Audio CD)
This is one of the most exciting house and breaks mixes i've heard in years. I don't know why, but this record reminds me of why i fell in love with electronic music and picked up turntables to begin with. It's soulful, yet at the same time just gritty enough to keep the edge necessary and vital in keeping electronic music, i mean quality electronic music, alive. The programming on these discs are absolutely impeccable, and the fact that they're based around the live 14 hour DJ Swamy and Astro&Glyde nights at New York's Le Souk, only adds to the image of the dancefloor's amazing energetic presence. Vividly epic breakdowns and buildups and crazy bumpy drops...this comp has everything i look for in a solid mix cd. It's not just about taking records and mixing them together, it's about choosing the right records and mixing them in a way that you can't really imagine one track without the other. Thatz what Swamy and Astro&Glyde have done. Seamless programming perfection and relentless technical DJ prowess combine to form by far the best house and breaks mix i've heard in a loooong time. 5.0 out of 5 stars (Rare) Original House Mix, December 27, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Le Souk Sunday Sessions (Audio CD)
Finally, a mix which brings back all that has been missing from House mixes for years - original songs, multiple genre's, excellent programming - all perfectiy combined into a solid musical experience.

While the By Day side definitely sounds somewhat laid back, it makes a great background for any loungey Sunday party - it is thoroughly consistent and casually danceable as much as it is listenable.

However, it is the By Night disk that will remind you of the old days of House mixing, where the build and flow of the mix matters as much as the track listing. All of the tracks are perfectly sequenced, consistently building up, dropping and breaking throughout, and ultimately peaking before gradually descending through several grooves to the final (and only) familiar track, Rachel Stars "Till there was you". Truly a mix worth purchasing and makes a great case for a visit to New York city to check out Le Zouk's Sundays Sessions for myself.

5.0 out of 5 stars 2005's number one mix compilation, September 10, 2005
This review is from: Le Souk Sunday Sessions (Audio CD)
To commemorate those everlasting and memorable Sundays, the Le Souk boys give us 2005's number one mix compilation, Le Souk Sunday Sessions. Le Souk is an unassuming North African lounge located in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan.

About four years ago, Jason Swamy joined up with the heavy hitting DJ and production duo of James and Gaby, also known as Astro&Glyde. Together, they founded the full-throttle funk-filled Sunday house party better known as Le Souk Sessions.

With a team comprised of Swamy, the founder of some of NYC's finest underground parties, and Astro&Glyde, residents of some NYC's finest underground parties, Le Souk Sundays was guaranteed to be a success.

And a success it was. In fact, the night became so successful that the owners of Le Souk were forced to meet the demand of clubbers by expanding their venue to include an outdoor patio terrace.

Though a typical Sunday evening party at Le Souk lasts about 14 hours (way into Monday morning), the boys tried to condense the energetically twisted journey into two discs. They were successful.

Their goal was to give us Le Souk but they went well beyond that and gave us Le Swank. This is a fantastic pair of discs, which touch on a variety of electronic dance music genres such as breaks, funky house, deep house, and progressive.

Swamy mixes Disc I `By Day,' a deep funky houser that successfully captures the sun-kissed sexiness of the party's early hours. Each track has delicious melody while still incorporating funk, energy, and grit. Standout tracks on `By Day' are:

Astro&Glyde `Chunky Humper'
Pashka `Island Breeze'
Plej `Blue'

Disc II `By Night,' mixed by Astro&Glyde, is a funky entrancing hand-raiser that accurately conveys the down and dirty sleaziness of the party's later hours. This disc is drenched in grit and funk but contains enough melody to keep the listener locked in from start to finish. Standout tracks on Disc 2 (Dawn) mixed by Astro&Glyde are:

Astro&Glyde `Dunt Dunt Dunt'
Spirit Catcher `Dirty Circuit'
Rachael Starr `Till There Was You' (Creamer & K Rmx)

I highly recommend this two-disc compilation. On the HIGHFIVE scale, it gets a HIGHFIVE (5 out 5). If you can, get your ass out to Le Souk or check out one of their events coming to your city soon. You won't be sorry, these guys know how to throw a party. Great job guys, keep up the good work! Le Souk Sunday Sessions, in stores now.
