5.0 out of 5 stars A strong book for young women May 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
SOURCE: ARC -- author provided

Every teen thinks their Mom is crazy at one time or another, but Brandy Jackson's Mom definitely does have some trouble. With the help of neighbors, Brandy's been coping the best she can, but her Mom finally snaps and Brandy's got to go live with her aunt.

The thing is, Brandy's moving from the hood to suburbia where she's one of the two Black kids in her high school. The one thing that saves her is the band, but being a Junior and not having ever played an instrument, she's stuck with the tuba. The whole band is stuck with a majorette who's in love with show tunes and Cirque de Soleil music.

Brandy's survived crazy, but can she survive bullying and out-and-out racism?

Karla Brady's got a fine hand crafting an urban teen with a whole lot of heart and soul. Brandy seems like a real girl--like one of the friends I had in band or glee club back in high school even.

The scenario's painfully real and one that many Black teens have faced. I believe Soul of the Band is going to be a book that will both help Black teens cope with racism and bullying and help White teens understand what minorities are up against.

One thing you can tell, Karla Brady loves music--all kinds of music. You can hear it through her words and you can feel the beat in her narrative. If music has charms to heal, I think this book may well, too.

This young woman (Brandy) is SO REAL!! Readers will be able to identify with her right away. For anyone who knows someone who has struggled with mental illness, never felt as if they fit in, and struggled to find their way in the world, this is a MUST READ! K.L. did a fantastic job! Spot on!

Ms. Brady has really outdone herself with this one. It presented a broad prospective of isolation, racism, prejudice, and friendship! 5 Stars! Can't wait till book #2 comes out!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bravo! It deserves more than five stars April 23, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Brandy is more mature than a regular teenager in her age group. Bullying is growing at an alarming rate among school age children. Brandy has a sharp mind and tongue. She takes no prisoners because life dealt her bad hand in parent department. I can't wait for the sequel.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fresh novel!!! Awesome October 29, 2012
By Letty
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The Soul of the Band is an excellent read, is fresh, funny and easy to read. I loved it. I found myself laughing out loud more than once. It is an excellent read for the young adults that provides good examples on how to overcome adversity and pain. I can't wait for the sequel. I don't give it a 5 Star because at the end it left me hanging and there is no mention of the sequel.

K. L. Brady is a D.C. native and grew up in Prince George's County, Maryland, the setting of her debut novel. When she hit her "tween" years, her mother packed the family and moved to Bellaire, Ohio, where she eventually graduated from Bellaire High School. She attended the University of Akron for a few semesters, where she pledged Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., before moving back to the D.C. area.

She discovered a love for reading and writing at the age of three, by her mother's accounts. Through the years, she has maintained diaries and journals, but the journals she wrote as an adult provided the inspiration for The Bum Magnet.

"Journaling allowed me to keep my writing a secret from the world. I'd write things and crack myself up, but I just never conceived of actually pursuing writing as anything other than an emotional outlet--that is, until I turned forty. With the real estate slump (my second love), and a high dose of Oprah's Best Life series, I realized I was suppressing a major part of who I was. I wanted to share my voice, experiences, and wacky sense of humor. The convergence of all those things was the kick the pants I needed to get off my duff and write my novel. Although most of the novel is a figment of my imagination and stretched truths, the main character's life does mirror my own in some respects...unfortunately."

A single mom, Brady lives just outside of D.C. in Cheltenham, Maryland, with her son, William. She's an editor for a government contracting firm and an active real estate agent with Exit Realty. Brady is also an alumnus of the University of the District of Columbia and University of Maryland University College, earning a B.A. in Economics and M.B.A., respectively.
