Men, we have to read this book! No, Not just read it, feel it,
as it speaks enormous volumes to our very souls.
True inspiration in its purest form can be gained while
provoking thought and a healthy dialogue.

3.0 out of 5 stars From Her Soul To Ours
C. Highsmith-Hooks' poetry has three things every good poem should contain; truth, pain, and the ability to make the reader see and feel the beauty within the poetry experience she writes about. Not only is The Soul of a Black Woman a collection of poetry that takes us through the soul of Highsmith-Hooks' soul, it is somewhat of a memoir. In poetic form she takes us...

4.0 out of 5 stars Suprise for the mind, December 18, 2002

This review is from: The Soul of a Black Woman: From a Whisper to a Shout (Paperback)
This book is fantastic. Its takes you through a journey of a black womans life. Most black men can not understand why black women are so strong. In reading this book, I realized that struggle can make you or break you, and in this case, it made a strong black woman. Thank you for the experience, and thank you for opening my eyes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, December 13, 2002
By
This review is from: The Soul of a Black Woman: From a Whisper to a Shout (Paperback)
The author C. Highsmith-Hooks did an excellent job of reaching out to the reader. The depth of emotions I felt cannot be explained in 1,000 words. Her poems took me on a journey filled with empathy, sadness, happiness, and triumph. Just when I think she's done; I am provided with a glimpse of talent not yet unleashed. I have not felt this way about poems since reading Maya Angelou who's work of art I hold very dear and close to my heart.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book, December 4, 2002

The author does an excellent job of making her feeling verbal. The emotion I felt while reading the book was overwhelming. It gave a true insight of the different stages of her life. The poems had many feelings that I have experienced throughout my life time as well. Great gift to buy for any strong woman you know.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poetry has never been this personal, pure and passionate, May 10, 2003
This review is from: The Soul of a Black Woman: From a Whisper to a Shout (Paperback)
I must say, Cynthia pours her soul into this unique work in a way that women can relate to and treasure as one of the most moving poetry books of our time! Men will enjoy this book too which reveals intimate details on how woman view their Black African Men. Don't let the cover fool you, Cynthia is all grown up and a diva at heart, zest for life, fond appreciation and love for her family, dual career oriented as evidenced in this masterpiece and has a very promising future as a writer. This is one lady to look out for. 5 Stars! The DLNA Heather Covington ( Founder of Disilgold)

Raw, direct and straight from the noodle.
The Soul of a Black Woamn: From a Whisper to a Shout reads of a woman

I truly enjoyed reading this book. I read it in one day because it was so very hard to put down. The author writes from her heart and soul. She includes some very personal information in her writing that hit home with me.
I loved the fact that she put pictures in her book, which made the book more enjoyable.
I look forward to the author's next book.
Truly a remarkable writer, as well as, a remarkable person.

In poetic form she takes us through her life, the highs, the lows, and her struggles as a black woman to a place inside of us that we all know very well but sometimes refuse to acknowledge. A must read, especially for black men trying to understand black women.

1.0 out of 5 stars "Emotional realization", December 3, 2002

I glanced at the book and before I knew it I had read three more poems. I understand from Mrs. Highsmith-Hooks' bio that her writings were very difficult in forthcoming at times. Not only did I feel her heart and soul being poured out, but also the earthy and realization of fact in each writing. I commend her totally for being able to put down on paper what so many other black women still have locked away. Mrs. Highsmith-Hooks' book makes for excellent reading. I wish her so much more success, it's obvious that she has the happiness!
