Biography

Biographyby by Richie Unterberger

While Solomon Burke never made a major impact upon the pop audience -- he never, in fact, had a Top 20 hit -- he was an important early soul pioneer. On his '60s singles for Atlantic, he brought a country influence into R&B, with emotional phrasing and intricately constructed, melodic ballads and midtempo songs. At the same time, he was ... Editorial Reviews

The classic blues album fully remastered!

Before the "comeback" of the GRAMMY-winning Don’t Give Up On Me; before he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; before his return to traditional ’60s-style R&B on 2005’s Make Do With What You Got, Solomon Burke had the blues. He’s primarily known as a soul singer, but this collection of blues classics proves what many have known for a long time: Solomon Burke is one the most powerful and persuasive singers of any kind anywhere.

3.0 out of 5 stars Solomons blues side July 10, 2003
By dpc915
Format:Audio CD
When this CD was released, Solomon Burke had yet to be named into the rock and roll hall of fame, had yet to make his "comeback" album Don't Give up on me....and was mostly concentrating on his various business ventures. All that said, he was in excellent voice. Its more of a blues side for Solomon and although a soulful release, I would not recommend this for casual fans....start with his atlantic greatist hits....or his live album. For the hardcore fans like myself, its a fine album, not his best, but a fine record...especially solomon singing "Candy"....good stuff

5.0 out of 5 stars The voice of the blues April 22, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Ultimately the blues is about the preformer's voices, the way he or she bends notes to reach inside your heart and pull it out--a pain so great it ultimately heals your soul's pain and reminds you of whatever you forgot. Here is Solomon Burke, one of the legendary voices in American music, rendering blues after funky blues in an unforgettable fashion. This is an essential CD for anyone who loves the blues--the real blues, not the questionable guitar based flaying about the British rockers called the blues sometime between the Rolling Stones and Lead Balloon.

I also feel it is the best work Solomon Burke ever did. I have two or three anthologies of his music; frankly, although I have a soft spot for his music due to old associations, I don't like his music as much as other notable soul singers. This CD blows the back of my head off.

I own the re-mastered version, which is very very well done--all the instruments seem crisp and present.

I highly recommend this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars blues April 16, 2012

If you like blues music, and I do, this is a great album. It reminds me of the music from the forties and fifties when real blues was played.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solomon Burke May 24, 2011

I love this CD simply because my step-dad is the drummer on it and he recently passed away. Any recordings that he did will be in my collection.
