Completely awsome!,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Soul Calibur 2 (Video Game)
Thsi game is totally awsome! I personally hate fighting games but this one changed all of that! With over 20 characters, multiple costumes, over 200 weapons and awsome graphics and sound, no wonder this game got the "best fighting game award!" Play it now! PS2 controller is the bomb, even better than the Gamecube and X-box ones! All of the characters have multiple attacks as well as individual skills. The graphics are jaw dropping. I love them, they are flawless and don't sketch or stop in any place. The movements are easy to see, and you won't be overwhelmed by fast movement. The music is incredible, as well as character voices. There are lots of unlockable things like weapons, modes, characters, and photo galleries. There is an endless list of things you can do here, as well as weapon master mode where you can go through hundreds of missions to fight. There are tons of missions like specific kill missions, last ??turns, kill multiple enemies, etc. Tons of possibilities! I would highly recomend this game, I think its better than the others on Gamecude and X-box!

I had never played the original Soulcalibur or even the PS1's Soul Blade so I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought it. But it was one of the best games I've ever played. I know that sounds like an overstatement but it's a really good game. I was pretty new to the fighting genre when I got this, actually it was only my third fighting game. I had recently purchased
Tekken 4 and was a little dissapointed with it. So I got SC2. And I'm glad I did it's probably the best fighting game I've played. Now I have quite a few fighting games but SC2 is still my favorite. The game's major strength is the fast paced fighting. Wow is it fast I don't want to make you think it's Super Smash Bros. Melee fast but it's fast compared to Tekken or Virtua Fighter. The only flaw with the gameplay that I've found is that sometimes charcters with long weapons such as Kilik can't reach other fighters that they should be able to hit. Other than that the gameplay is flawless. The game has quite a few fighters compared to other fighting games. Audio wise the game is pretty good the characters mouths move with the words unlike other games *Cough* Tekken *Cough*. The music is decent but not very many fighting games have great music anyway. If you can't stand annoying english voice overs you can switch to japanese. I haven't found anything wrong with the english voice overs so far. The game is a little different than other fighters because in SC2 you fight with weapons. There's quite a bit of different weapons to chose from. The only problem is you can't switch the characters weapons from a sword to nunchucks which kind of upset me because I would like to see Nightmare fight with Talim's little blades. The single player mode is quite fun for a fighting game. When you begin the game you pick a character to play the game with. You can switch to a different fighter when ever you want which was helpful in certain missions. After you pick a fighter you go through a training area. In this game you don't go from fight to fight it's a little different. What you do is go from area to area and in each area there is a certain amount of missions. Some missions are just basic fights but others are more complicated like beating someone by only using wall combos. It doesn't sound hard but it gets harder. There's ten areas but there's two or three bonus areas you can play optionally. It's really fun. The story is pretty simple you are this fighter who hears about a sword called Soul Edge. So you decide to set out and find the sword. Pretty simple. The multiplayer is the best part of this game. It may be just pick a character and a weapon and then fight but it's so addicting. I don't know why. Overall this game is easily five star worthy so if you like fighting games or just games in general I recommend this game. You won't regret spending $20 on it.

One of the best new games in a LONG time,

This is, overall, one of the best games to come out in quite a while. In the fighting genre, this is almost the top of its class. In fact, I'm enjoying this game more right now than even the newer Mortal Kombat games. The characters are great, the backgrounds are absolutely beautiful, and the fighting styles are varied and entertaining. This is definitely the next generation in fighting video games. It's difficult for many of the newer games to handle the 3-D fighting, but Soul Caliber pulls it off flawlessly. It's not really that gory for those who object, but is violent enough to keep anyone entertained for hours on end. I never played the original Soul Caliber, but I can definitely say that this is shaping up to be one of the best games yet on these newer systems (PS2, XBOX, and GameCube).

This game is by far the best out there. You may buy/sell/trade your other fighting games over time, but this is certainly one that you should always keep! If you've never played it before, you must get it!

I played Soul Calibur 3 before playing Soul Calibur 2. There's not much difference between the two games other than the fact that SCIII has more features and extras. The graphics on the newer game is also slightly, not noticeably, superior to the older game. I admit buying Soul Calibur only upon learning that KOS-MOS from Xenosaga makes a cameo appearance in SC3. You can use the Character Creation Mode in the third game to build a fighter that looks just like KOS-MOS. Eventually, I got addicted to Soul Calibur.
Both are fun games. Each offers you many characters to choose from. SCIII even offers you the option of creating your own character. Each of these characters have unique weapons and attack moves. You can replay these games over and over, using different characters and you will never get tired. The combination of characters, costumes, and weapons, make this a game that will have a long replay value. I rated Soul Calibur 2 higher than I did for Soul Calibur 3 simply because the battle AI in the older game is more consistent. You will play just as well with your character no matter who your opponent is. That doesn't mean that you will have the same challenge facing every enemy. If you choose a short range character and fight a long range character, you will naturally have to work harder to deal damage. However, unlike Soul Calibur 3, here you don't get the feeling that the AI is cheating on you and playing "favorites" with some characters like Seong-Mina or Talim. With SC2, you don't get the feeling that the AI is holding you back. In other words, if you get your rearend kicked, it meant that the enemy outplayed you and not because the AI put your character in slow motion. I'm referring to single mode, when you play against the CPU. I highly recommend this game. I am new to playing the Soul Calibur series. I'm glad I gave this series a chance. It's a very, very fun fighting game series from Namco. I guarantee that you will spend countless hours in Practive Mode to learn the very complex character moves. As for me, I spend so much time with these games, SC2 and SC3, that I have actually developed a callus on my left thumb from playing so much. I get so worked up during battles that I tend to slam the left analog stick while entering my commands. Rough on the controller and hard on your thumb. But that just proves how addictive the Soul Calibur games are.

I love Soul Calibur II. The game is a fighter with a wide variety of characters available from the start and several more unlockable. The arcade mode never gets old, even after you've beaten it several times. Weapon Master is a good mode, even if the extra missions are tough. Several weapons are available, and each character has a distinct fighting style. The graphics are beautiful, the soundtrack is great, and the girls are hot. A must-buy.

SECOND best fighting game of all time,

Over the last 3 years, there have been a bevy of fighters abound. Currently, however the main contenders are the Virtua Fighter and the Soul Calibur Series with Mortal Kombat and Tekken's dissapointing showings putting them just out of the bubble, though that could change with a good future release. Anyway, I have played both Virtua Fighter 4 and VF4 Evolution as well as Soul Calibur 2, and while Soul Calibur 2 is the best weapons fighterin its class(though to be fair there arent very many weapons fighters), Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution takes the cake. Now for the features of Soul Calibur:Characters: 9/10(simply because I have no need for Heihachi in a weapons fighter, 10/10 for Xbox and GC)VF4:10/10 Controls: 9/10(Clunky as you get used to them but easilly adapted when you get the hang of it) VF4 9/10(same reason) Moves: 10/10(Perfect combinations of easy and difficult moves with a simple yet complex system) VF4: 10/10 Special Mode(overall): 10/10 (Slightly edges out VF4's quest mode because the weapons you acquire effect you in combat) VF4:9/10 Special Mode system: 8/10 (while some of the fights are fun and innovative, like one in a windy area where you have to knock your opponent off a windmill, it can be a pain going through the dungeons, fighting drone after drone, while gaining back minimal hitpoints to sustain you from some of the massive attacks, unrewarding ranking system with no real base) VF4:9/10(easier to sustain, many fighting modes, relatively easy to unlock things, good ranking system, can always take a break but still be able to fight new people, very long) Replay Value: I decided not to count the replay value, because in fighting games that is hard to judge but I would mark them about even. Graphics: 10/10 (superb, easy to move around in, great environments) VF4: 10/10 (similarly flawless) The winner: Virtua Fighter 4/VF4 Evolution! Both franchises will hopefully be making admirable fighting games down the road and both games are worth getting but VF4 slightly edges out SC2 to take the prize. Though this did not effect my decision in any way, as a bonus, Virtua Fighter 4 and Virua Fighter 4 Evolution both are only $19.99 while SC2 is $37.95. Simply put, if you are strapped for cash and can only afford one, get Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution, but if you can spend a little money, then get both of these masterfully rendered fighting games. Click my name and find my Virtua Fighter 4 and Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution reviews as well.

Love to Fight? Soul Caliber 2 is the Best Fighting Game of 2003. With Mulitple challenges and extras, this game can go on and on forever. The Best part, Spawn. Yes, even Spawn will get in on some action in this fighter, plus a few of your old favorates from the Tekken Series. The Worst Part, Repetetive. Although you can play alone or with a friend with tons of options you will kinda be doing the same thing over and over again and that's fighting, so if you love fighting games this game is a must have but if your not too hot on them DONT go THERE! SC2 gives you every option including choice of difficulty and might I say that VERY HARD is VERY HARD. One this is missing from this game that I thought could have made it a little more interesting and thats the FINISH HIM Mortal Combat Final Fatality which this game leaves out, oh well, I'm sure there will be a SC3. So, all in all GOOD FUN. Two very enthusiastic thumbs up. Fight!

And much more fun and entertaining than that game with the three girls (something about a final fantasy and rated X-2, and it has an Asian chick singing in a commercial, but that's besides the point). The first fighting game I've played was Mortal Kombat, and it was in the arcades. Believe me, too many controls, too many moves to memorize, I was beaten in 60 seconds flat. Now, about 7 or 8 years later, here is a fighting game where I can actually defeat the enemies and win! I played Soul Caliber 2 just for the fun of it as part of a demo and I knew I had to have this game. I'm not familiar with the history of Soul Calibur or any of its characters -- I just wanted a game that I can play for hours on end and without having to defeat it in under an hour (Enter The Matrix anyone?).The PS2 version of Soul Calibur II looks absolutely wonderful. The graphics are bright, eyepopping and blazing, and they're much smoother than a similar version of the game for Game Cube. I have not played SC II for XBox, so I can't make any assessment about how it compares to the versions for CG or PS2. Now, the game...what's so good about SC II besides the game's graphics? Well, of course, the actual playability! You choose any character you want (I chose Taki) and whoever you're pitted against, you just run up to your opponent and destroy him/her. I actually feel like a hardcore gamer playing SC II, and the game itself with all those sounds and graphics feels like a game for hardcore gamers! During the Survival round, I got through the first 8 opponents...and was destroyed in the 9th round (the last opponent I faced was Kilik, and he tore me apart with that large stick). If a game can frustrate me that much, the guys at Namco have done their jobs very well and have certainly done something right with Soul Calibur II. The game also has a practice round so that new gamers like me can learn the basics of SC II. Sometimes, Soul Calibur II is so good that when you're actually fighting your opponent, your adrenaline is pumping and you find yourself too involved in the game that you forget that it's just that: A game. The style of the fighting is like Motal Kombat; the actual fighting is like a street fight, and you'll be shouting at your screen, "Come on! You want a piece of me? Let's go!" Soul Calibur II is definitely one of the best fighting games out there today, and it earns my highest recommendation. Yes, it's expensive, but definitely worth every penny. Of course, good things come to those who wait: Soul Calibur II will eventually earn its place in PlayStation 2's Greatest Hits collection by the end of 2004. But if you do not want to wait that long, start the new year off right: PURCHASE SOUL CALIBUR II TODAY!!!!!!!!!!

It's good but not impressive.,

This review is from: Soul Calibur 2 (Video Game)
Soul Calibur II has it's moments, but it lacks the graphics on certain areas. The superficial display of the characters takes time to load and that was never an issue in the first Soul Calibur for DreamCast. Also when certain complicated moves are executed, the PSX2 actually slows down or lags during good fight scenes. I can't argue too much of the changes of the moves, but Mitsurugi lacked certain moves I liked from the first. He can no longer jump mid-air at his enemies and that forces him to only attack head on instead of inside the opponent and using it as a window of attack. Though certain areas of the graphics were enhanced and the battle stage to be more part of the fight, the fighters themselves look less realistic compared to the first game in some ways. Their skin, their clothes, eyes, and body movements seem to show less attention as to their ability to fight. It's true it's a fighting game, but most people would agree attention to detail is important. In terms of game play, they made some decent improvements, but I didn't like how they changed some of the major characters looks. Mitsurugi looks and sounds less mature than of the first, Seung Mina's cuteness were changed into a more bolder and stronger face(kind of miss the cuter version), Voldo can't have many complaints, Maxi now plays with his hair, Sophitia's superficial appearance in terms of graphics is worse than of the first one, Ivy's moves are less complicated (a plus, but also her moves been altered as well), and Nightmare's new look baffled me because why would a blood thristy killer look anymore deadly with a red scarf and bat-like wings on its helmet(some dramatic flare, but not impressive)? Because Charade, Talim, and others are new I would say they are ok, but honestly Soul Calibur should include the old and all the new ones too just for relation to the old games like Li-Long, Lizard Man, Hwang, and Rock. Over all the game is decent, but I expected a greater depth in graphics instead of a mix trade of certain improvements and certain things degraded in terms of quality. Still I would recommend this game because it's still a good game to play, but I hope Soul Calibur III would put more characters mixed with old ones and at the same time don't sacrafice quality graphics. Of course I have yet to see the Game Cube or X Box version, but I rather have it on X Box because of it's greater graphics performance. It's also because I don't like Tekken boy Heihaichi, rather play as Link or Spawn any day. They could have put in better characters than HeiHaichi of Tekken. It's another stupid thing I don't like about the new version because they make you buy like 3 different versions to play everyone, why not be nice about it and give it to us all instead of only in one game console in the same of profit? I understand maximizing profit, but I am also a consumer that can't spend money on games all the time. It's totally unfair! Still I would still buy one of the versions, but in my opinion just not for PSX2. It's up to the reader to decide though, so you don't have to take my word for it. I'm just telling it as it is. I liked playing it, still you think you could make it more realistic like blood spewing out, half of the moves made in this game can kill a human being already and yet they are alive and not dead. Other moves can cause a person to be in the wheel chair for life, but I guess you can't expect too much realism or it will just kill the enjoyment of killing or whooping someone. I hope this thorough review helps you decide...
