5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites
This was one of a dozen albums that I owned in college (vinyl, I didn't have the money for those new-fangled cd players back then). It helped me to really love jazz. I heard La Plus Belle Africaine on the radio, remembered how much I love the rest of the album, and had to buy this one.

I'm not going to pretend that it's in the same category as Live at Newport...

Intimate club sit-in with Duke and his big band crew does succeed at giving enthusiasts a well recorded live experience featuring his spectacular arrangements, however with the onslaught of grunts and groans, and some of the highest horn squeals this side of Zorn, this swingin' time is not without a share of piercing indulgences, not the least is how...

I'm not going to pretend that it's in the same category as Live at Newport '56, or Miles Davis' Kind of Blue, but it's a good solid album, the kind of thing properly enjoyed with a glass of whiskey (neat) and a pipe on a quiet evening.

3.0 out of 5 stars Would have been 5 stars, but...., August 20, 2000

After being spoiled by a REAL audience on 'Live at Newport '56 [COMPLETE]', i am 90% sure this concert recording from 1966 was ruined by the addition of a very blatantly FAKE audience track. Nothing more annoying than canned applause being mixed in and out! AHHH! I think if this hadn't been done, this would be a VERY fine CD. Duke and crew are certainly in fine form. Wish i could have been there.
