A New "Case of You",
By Beau Stubblefield-Tave (Boston) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Soul Celebration (Audio CD)
"Soul Celebration" is even higher on my all time favorites list than Joni Mitchell's "Blue." That's high praise from a longtime Joni fan. I loved all 13 songs on Soul Celebration. Like Joni, Stephanie is an impressive songwriter with a variety of styles, and a beautiful and versatile voice. She can pack a punch as in "Last Kiss" a tale of infidelity based on a dream, or be wistful as in "Last Day on Earth." Stephanie accompanies herself on both violin and guitar to nice efect. She can attack the ad industry one moment for its images of girls and women then josh her friends "scamming each other" on the search for love the next. If you love Joni Mitchell, Dan Fogelberg, Phoebe Snow, Steve Goodman or others with a talent for words and folk music, try Soul Celebration. If you're in Chicago, try to catch her live. You can email her at flmusic@earthlink.com Beau In the interest of full disclosure, I'm a friend as well as a fan. I've met Stephanie and her husband Vince (also a musician) at a few performances. They're nice people, but the music speaks for itself.

Songs from the heart,
By Vince Dickinson (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Soul Celebration (Audio CD)
There are thirteen original songs on this album that, while all done in a folky style, transcend genres. One of the best is "If This Was You Last Day on Earth" - a sad but uplifting tale that sort of makes you glad to be alive. Soft acoustic guitar and piano make a perfect bed for Stephanie's incredible voice. "Gorgeous" is a rally against the media's depiction of what women should look like. It's more acoustic rock that folk. "Longing to Fly" is a great song about two people meeting in the big city. You really get an excellent picture of two people's personalities though concise but interesting lyrics. There are a lot of good songs here. Stephanie has a very cool and unique voice - a strong, full-sounding soprano that really showcases the diversity of emotion on this album. The production is decent, but there are some rough edges. I think it's here first record (the only one at Amazon) and I'm looking forward to future releases.
