Editorial Reviews

"Soul Companions is a stunning book. It assembles an amazing collection of interviews with some of the finest and most unusual people from the worlds of alternative thinking and teaching. For anyone interested in the future of human growth and development this is an absolute `must read'." -- John Matthews: author of `Walkers Between Worlds'

"Soul Companions is an amazing and enlightening anthology of profound experiences shared between some of the world's most revered wisdom keepers and their spirit guides. Inspiring and empowering, it lights a path for all of us to follow." -- John Perkins: New York Times bestselling author of `Confessions of an Economic Hit Man' and `The Secret History of the American Empire'.

"An extraordinarily ambitious project reaching to `the ends of the Earth' and into the realms beyond. Dip into this compendium of accounts of spirit guides from every Earth culture, and you enter a slipstream of consciousness that leaves `the real world' looking flat and crumpled as a cardboard cutout. Soul Companions is truly a gift and a source of nourishment for the soul." -- Carolyn Burdet: Kindred Spirit Magazine

"I would like to express my deep admiration and gratitude to Karen Sawyer for this truly remarkable and satisfying book. That it will, in generations to come, survive as a much loved, battered and dog-eared treasure attests to the fact that it is both timeless and timely no matter which century one happens to be reading it in. This book will flick switches." -- Ellis Taylor: author of `In These Signs Conquer ~ Revealing the Secret Signs an Age has Obscured'.

"The world of the spirits is completely normal for many cultures and normal for our culture, if we dare to admit it. Soul Companions reinforces this reality, and affirms our own deep connection to the unseen - dare you not accept it?" -- Sacred Hoop Magazine

From the Author

This book has been gestated and nurtured for over two years, and is about to be birthed into the world. Suffice to say, I feel like an altogether different person than I was at its conception. I do not doubt that this particular book, which has opened me up to so many profound teachings and wisdom, has had a vital part to play in these changes.
The huge range and diversity of these experiences reveal fascinating insights into the evolving connection between other dimensions of existence and the earth plane. During the writing of this book, I have met and interviewed some remarkable souls. My wish is that you will be as inspired as I have by their experiences.

"Soul Companions" is an intriguing, useful book that brings together keepers of spiritual wisdom from all parts of the world and from diverse areas of active spiritual work.

It was probably the recommendation of John Matthews in this book that prompted me to go ahead and buy "Soul Companions" through Amazon, as I am greatly inspired by the work John Matthews and his partner Caitlin Matthews are doing in Celtic shamanism.

It was inspiring for this reader to know, through this book, of the many people in the world doing good work in their own ways as contemporary keepers of spiritual wisdom. Reading the various essays of these wisdomkeepers gives you the feeling that you are sitting in a circle of spiritual friends, as each one in turn talks about her/his encounters with Spirit and the various kinds of work they specialize in, be it with plants, animals, humans, machines and, of course, spirits themselves.

The author, Karen Sawyer, ties all the stories nicely together with her own narrative and personal accounts of being on the spiritual path.

That said, some of the essays in this book did seem a bit too "new-agey" for me (my focus is more on core shamanism). Also, the book leans toward featuring well-known spiritualists in the western world -- it would have been nice to have read of some firsthand accounts by the many indigenous healers from various other parts of the planet as well who are often not in the media spotlight.

The book, however, does list useful contact information for all of the persons who are featured here. I've finished going through the website of each and every contributor to the book to compare and contrast their work -- and that in itself was an interesting journey!

A highly recommended book for beginners on the spiritual path as well as specialists in their spiritual craft.

The author of this book clearly had a good heart, good inentions and positive enthusiasm when she began writing it. Its just such a great pity then that she picked people to interview who in some notable cases simply do not share the same qualities as her. I can't say Im entirely sympathetic though as she wrote to me when she was planning it and I gave her a heads-up on at least two to avoid but she went ahead and included them anyway. One of them was Simon Buxton who, in this volume, is mooted as the carrier of an ancient and occult tradition of bee shamanism. The email below, which I received recently from one of the `melissae' - i.e. a lady who has invested time and money with Mr Buxton so that she may become an initiate of the tradition he pretends - should give the lie to that. And there is also at least one other 'pretender' and 'plastic guru' in this book who does not deserve to be there and who diminishes the author's credibility by his inclusion.

In summary then, I give the author 3 stars but they are for enthusiasm and for wanting to bring a worthwhile message to the world at all rather than for her research or understanding of the field. I hope that the latter does not undermine the former too much or dash the credibility of this book in its entirety.

I record here verbatim the comments I recently recived from a 'bee goddess' - i.e. the woman I mention above who has spent considerable time and money to "initiate" in Simon Buxton's supposedly "arcane" and "ancient" "bee tradition" of "celtic shamanism". This should give you an indication of the quality and credibility of some of the sources used by the author.

I'd love to know what mind-melting drugs that 'anonymous' was on when he/she/'it' bashed the wonderful 'Soul Companions' written, edited, and compiled by Karen Sawyer. I could not disagree more vehemently with the sad conclusions drawn by this seemingly sad naysayer. Three worthwhile interviews? Ha! Too 'new age?' Wow...get the coffee brewing, Anonymous--and check your pulse while you're at it!

For the sake of discussion I will mention just one of the dozens of beautiful and insightful interviews NOT mentioned by dear Anonymous. The first is with Tiokasin Ghosthorse, a member of the Cheyenne River Lakota Nation, who disclaims any titles like 'Medicine Man' or 'Spiritual Guru,' but whose words are certainly equivalent to some of the great thinkers of our time. I found it fascinating how Ghosthorse spoke of the graphic nature of the Lakota language--and how 25% of the Lakota language cannot be translated into other languages. It's a spiritual language from a people whose essence is BASED on spiritual ways. It is their BEING, and it is why when the US military outlawed the Ghost Dance and many other great spiritual ways, the Lakota almost suffocated.

No, I'm quite sorry, Anonymous, but your shallow ways betray you. If you don't like the book, fine. Donate it to a library...but don't criticize a book rich with thoughtful interviews ANONYMOUSLY and then expect us to believe that you should be taken sincerely. If you can't show diversity of understanding -- and you dismissively characterize the entire book of interviews as "new age," or worse, well, shame on you. Ms. Sawyer has done a wonderful job of capturing the essence of deep spiritual thinkers from many differing religions, practices, and philosophical viewpoints...and I pick up the book often during the course of every month to re-read many of the interviews.

For those who have the courage to explore with an open mind, SOUL COMPANIONS is rich with provocative wisdom. You will love this book.
