The subtitle for this book is "Clean Living in a Contaminated World", and it is must read material for the Body of Christ. Pastor Groeschel deals with relevant topics such as identifying false beliefs; the power of your words and thoughts; toxic behaviors, emotions, relationships and influences; healthy boundaries; legalistic religion; forgiveness and bitter roots.

Our culture is saturated with beliefs and behaviors that are counter-productive to the blessings that come from living life in a God-ordained way. We have great freedom in Christ, but many of the freedoms available to us culturally and socially do not truly bring life to us, nor do they have long-term value.

The mind is the primary battlefield for spiritual growth and transformation and this is why Soul Detox is so needed. Here are some of my favorite quotes from the book:

"The longer we view ourselves through a distorted lens, the more likely we are to believe a distorted truth."

"We trust money to make us significant because we don't know who we are in Christ. And we believe money will make us secure because we trust money more than we trust Christ."

"You are not a victim of your thoughts. You have the power through Christ to take them captive."

"When our moods and emotional needs depend on acquiring more possession, more money, more toys, then we're in for a toxic shock when we find our hands full and our hearts empty."

"When we truly change what we believe, we'll gladly change how we behave."

"Rather than sinking into the quicksand of sin, you can swim into the clean water of God's forgiveness and cleansing love.

This book is a must read for anyone living in our culture today. It's not a list of do's and don't's to detox your soul but a close examination of what influences and emotions you are allowing to pollute your mind, will, and emotions. It will step on your toes and force you to ask yourself some really tough questions, but in the end, if you let the truth of what God is telling you shine through the book, your heart and soul will never be the same.

There are a lot of really positive reviews for this book. So I want to be careful to not insult any of them with my review. But, I politely disagree with all of the 5 star reviews.
This book is great for a newer Christian or one that needs or wants these sort of guard rails (in my opinion). If you are a believer that is seeking to stretch and grow, you may be disappointed with Soul Detox.
Again in my opinion, this is the usual Christian self-help book put out there that doesn't do much to challenge a person's walk or understanding. But you should understand that I have already done a lot of unplugging from the culture. So, this book wasn't really written to someone like me. I am looking for a book that will challenge me and give me a new perspective. A book that will make me examine how I live out my faith. And for me, the suggestion to not watch The Virgin Suicides wasn't really what I was looking for when I bought this book.

This was an awesome read. There are so many little things that get in the way of our everyday life, and Pastor Craig nails them down and reminds us that nothing can hold us back from living the better life God intended!

In a culture that's hyper focused on the newest diet or exercise routine, rarely do we ever talk about how to cleanse our heart. Pastor Craig writes with clarity, love & a passion for seeing your Soul forever changed. Read THIS BOOK!!

I was fortunate enough to read Soul Detox in advance and hear him preach on this subject. I can honestly say that the practical implications for me after hearing this message have shifted the way I think, react and how I want to move forward to be all that God has called me to be.

We're all under renovation and this is a great tool that not only brings to our attention the toxicity of the world we're living in but gives us practical steps on how we can detox and become all that we were meant to be.

It's a good read.

I began reading Soul Detox upon the recommendation from my Bible Study leader, but was immediately struck by something being "off" within its pages. I have read many Christian self-help books (my categorization) over the decades and, simply put, this book is poorly written by comparison. That is not to say the book contains no minor truths and/or helpful tidbits, but not reading it will not leave you a lesser Christian by any means. The book reads as if it was written "from the hip" by the author/pastor -- which is typical of many Christian self-help books these days -- and it drones on (and on) like a Sunday sermon series gone terribly overboard. The author's purposeful decision to use the word and theme "toxic" is understood by the masses at face value, for as evangelical Christians we can readily relate Sin with being Toxic (to our Souls). But the author's misuse of the word, in addition to his lack of written style, eloquence and prose of any sort, are exceptionally off-putting regardless of his message. Subsequently, his lack of metaphorical originality (I've heard Sin be called toxic many time before), combined with the book's absence of true scriptural exegesis, and the author's inexcusable failure to conduct proper hermeneutics, all leads me to be incapable of recommending this book. In the end, I requested a refund. If you desire true "self-help" with your Christian spiritual walk, you do not need to resort to this sort of Christianized pop-psychology drivel. Do not let your personal relationship with Christ be relegated to simple pop culture metaphors and analogies. There are greater Christian self-help works out there, many of which written outside our generation and absent of pop culture references. Try some Dietrich Bonhoeffer, H. Richard Niebuhr, Oswald Chambers, or Alasdair MacIntyre (for the truly discerning)...not everything in your Walk should be comfortable.
