This should come as no surprise, but it does.,

"Soul On Fire", released in September 2001, reached my ears in January of '02. Having heard only one track, "Home" off a "Martha Stewart Themed Compilation", I prepared to enjoy one or two tracks, which seems to be the standard these days, at least to my discerning and sometimes irrationally critical tastes. This record is the most complete performance I have heard since Shawn Colvin's "Fat City".The title cut "Soul On Fire" starts things out with flare, pun intended"...the snappy uptempo groove crackles along and whets the appetite for things to come. Without getting too deep into this, let me just say that Jenny Bruce's songs, her voice and the production of each track are unique. The diversity of the songs is so refreshing. She doesn't lay back and do the same kinda thing track after track in the name of style...everything is brand new...I can't urge you enough to buy this CD......it's a hidden treasure.

I've got the first album, and this is a really strong follow up! I have the pleasure of seeing Jenny locally here in New York quite a bit. If you can get here for one of her gigs, do!!

A Real Pleasure,
By Sue Dressel (Littleton, Co USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Soul On Fire (Audio CD)
Jenny Bruce's new album, Soul On Fire, defies easy categorizing, in that it seems pop-folk, with some rock, and maybe sometimes a cabaret sound. Her lyrics are thoughtful and her melodies grab you. I have listened to it many times already. She has a wonderful voice. Amsterdam is a real winner, as well as Home, Running, and Amen. But it is all enjoyable.
