Book Description

Peter Terry Returns

A knock at her door. A bloody axe. A murder weapon in her own living room. The elusive white man with the slash on his back is out hunting again, chasing souls. Peter Terry is haunting minds, invading dreams, and wrecking lives. As Dylan Foster searches for answers, she stumbles upon a dark cult of angel worship. Harking back to the days of Noah, it’s now blinding and intoxicating young people, leading them to their deaths. In this battle for souls, everything’s up for grabs, leaving Dylan grasping for strength as the battle rages around her. When at last she discovers the truth, it is far from the truth she expected.

“What does Peter Terry want with my son?”

“The same thing he wants with all of us. Peter Terry is a hunter,” I said. “He’s hunting souls.”

Dylan Foster, a psychology professor at Southern Methodist University, is preparing for a Saturday night date when she hears something at her front door. She opens the door--and a bloody ax falls into her entryway, bringing a young woman’s murder, quite literally, into Dylan's living room. Caught up in a desperate search for answers, Dylan must use her psychologist’s mind and acute spiritual radar to unearth the connections between the murdered girl; the accused murderer and convicted rapist Gordon Pryne; and Peter Terry, the elusive white man with the slash on his back.

Peter Terry is hunting again, chasing souls, haunting minds, invading dreams, and wrecking lives. As Dylan draws closer to the answer she seeks, she stumbles upon a discovery that draws her ever deeper into danger. But Dylan cannot find the truth—not until she realizes nothing is as it seems in the fight for the human soul…

“The master of supernatural mystery, Melanie Wells delivers big time in The Soul Hunter. A dash of romance and a generous serving of humor, seasoned with grace, makes this a thriller not to be missed.”

Kathryn Mackel, author of The Hidden

“Part mystery thriller, part comedy of manners, part novel of moral scrutiny, The Soul Hunter showcases Wells’ gift for spinning an intricate tale filled with an edgy mix of humor, suspense, and spiritual intrigue. I swallowed the novel in one deliciously terrified gulp.”

K. L. Cook, author of Last Call and The Girl from Charnelle

Story Behind the Book

“These themes—the reality of spiritual warfare, the faithfulness of God, the significance of seemingly mundane events, the importance of individual faithfulness—have always fascinated me. And Peter Terry is such a compelling character. Writing this book was almost like showing up to see what he would do next! The dimensions of the individual being seemed to spin out, creating fascinating characters and a storyline that wove itself in complicated and unexpected ways.”

—Melanie Wells

5.0 out of 5 stars Again, an excellent work..., April 12, 2006
This review is from: The Soul Hunter (Dylan Foster Series #2) (Paperback)
Creepy. Haunting. Realistic. Thought-provoking. Hilarious. Those are the first words that come to my mind in attempting to describe The Soul Hunter. Oh, and rats. If you can't handle rats, don't even pick up this book. Better yet, deal with your rat phobia and pick up the book anyway.

The night before her 35th birthday, Dylan Foster and her boyfriend David are scheduled to go out for a nice dinner. While she is getting ready for her date, Dylan hears a thud at the front door. She runs to open it, hoping for a present from UPS. Instead, she finds a bloody axe on her porch. After reporting the incident, she finds out there has been a murder, and she has been thrown right in the middle of it.

Happy birthday to Dylan.

You'd think Dylan would've had enough trouble from demons and murderers. But the saga continues and even worsens for this Texas psychologist. In addition to the axe, terror strikes when Peter Terry shows up again. Can things possibly get worse? Oh yeah.

The story continues as the search for the murderer intensifies. But things are not as they seem. A deeper power is at work for those whose lives hang in the balance. Will Dylan lean on the One who can get her through this ordeal? Will more innocent people have to suffer, or will mercy reign?

In the first book of this series, Dylan learned the inestimable value of prayer and the Word. With that knowledge under her belt, will she put on God's full armor as the only way to combat the devil's evil schemes?

There is a battle raging for men's souls. Those who wish to harm mortal man play for keeps. Thankfully, there is Someone stronger than the forces of darkness, and He is available to those who call on Him. Spiritual warfare is real, as the author has intimated in this supernatural tale. I admire the way Wells has us peer into the unseen (and sometimes seen) and think about what is happening beyond our limited vision. If we have the spiritual eyes to see, we will find God is definitely at work.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and highly recommend this up and coming author of supernatural suspense. This genre deserves more fantastic books like this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Mystery with Attitude!, June 15, 2006
This review is from: The Soul Hunter (Dylan Foster Series #2) (Paperback)
Although there is a super-creepy villain on the cover of The Soul Hunter, demonic Peter Terry doesn't make much of a show, making this novel have more of a super snarky chick-lit mystery feel rather than horror.

In my opinion, what really makes this book stand out is the true to life heroine: A sassy thirty something, single, academic who always finds herself in the middle of one mess or another.

For mystery lovers, you'll be pleased by the twists Melanie throws at you. The writing is superb and the plot satisfying and unpredictable.

Melanie Wells is an excellent storyteller. Her writing is hip, sassy, relevant and highly entertaining.

4.0 out of 5 stars Keeps you guessing!, May 12, 2006
By
This review is from: The Soul Hunter (Dylan Foster Series #2) (Paperback)
We first met the quirky Dr. Dylan Foster in When the Day of Evil Comes, the first book in this spiritual warfare thriller series. On the eve of her thirty-fifth birthday, as she tries on a bathing suit in a department store and sees her backside in the mirror, she begins obsessing about reducing her thighs. While that may not be unusual, the bloody axe tossed onto the entrance to her house as a car sped away is.

Thinking she received a birthday present, Foster opens the door, picks up the axe, and gets blood all over herself just as her boyfriend appears to take her out for her birthday. But that's only the beginning. Demon Peter Terry appears in the middle of a wintry Dallas night and lets Foster know he's back by infesting her incredibly immaculate home with rats.

Once the police decide Foster isn't an axe murderer, she begins her own criminal investigation and discovers the secrets of the murdered co-ed raised in a religious commune.

That is when Foster's battle with Peter Terry begins in earnest. Both her personal life and her professional life teeter on the edge of a downward spiral as Terry works his evil against her.

Armchair Interviews says: Plan to feel the tension, to enjoy the intrigue, and to lose some sleep while this book keeps you guessing until the end.
