Pop music is a ‘here today, gone tomorrow’ world. A starburst of YouTube notoriety and then oblivion. Or at least it is for most. But when your journey has been as long and extraordinary as Nneka’s – when you’ve travelled 10,000 miles and are still only just starting out - then instant celebrity is the last thing on your mind.

When your heart is as big as ... Read more in Amazon's Nneka Store

Editorial Reviews

2012 release, the third album from the Nigerian/German singer/songwriter. An effortlessly balanced combination of Hip Hop beats, Reggae grooves, brass riffs and African Pop are the canvas for the motif of love, pain, politics and God. Respective albums have earned Nneka the moniker of 21st Century Soul for their sincerity and frankness and this album is no different. Featuring guest collaborations with The Roots' Black Thought ('God Knows Why') and Ms. Dynamite ('Sleep') Soul Is Heavy further affirms her credentials as a fast-rising star of black-consciousness music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Walk With Nneka October 16, 2011
Verified Purchase
A compelling conscious voice with the gift of musical talent, Nneka is not your everyday singer. She is often compared to Lauryn Hill, fair, but take Nneka on her own terms. She is a shining star, an independent and confident artist forging ahead. Nneka can belt out a hard-drivin' politically charged hip-hop song, just as easy as she can offer you an emotional love and loss anthem. In one song she can span the globe... rock out, chill out, and deliver a strong, irresistible reggae hook in the process. Nneka's latest release, Soul is Heavy is all of this. It represents her vocal range, and musical depth perhaps more than her previous cds. I gravitate toward Stay, Do You love Me Now, and Valley. I also love the provocative God Knows Why featuring Black Thought. Nneka makes every lyric significant and she naturally grabs you with her vocals. When she cries out, Do you love me? or Baby would you walk with me?... well, you will feel it and you will Walk with Nneka.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you have not seen her live... April 2, 2012
Format:MP3 Music
then you are missing out. I saw her at The Vinyl in Atlanta for $10 . She is the most incredible performer I have seen . I love Sade yet her concert was on par or better than Sade. At The Vinyl it is a small club and being maybe 20 feet from her she sounded 100 times better than her album. Her band is incredible It is shameful the vast majority of music listeners do not know her.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Solid Nneka Album March 5, 2012
By Kamal
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
My only real exposure to Nneka came a couple years ago when she was touring with Nas and Damian Marley. She had a mixtape and a US release which was an amalgamation of past tracks. Both of those releases were a breath of fresh air to me. There's nothing like that "new music high."

Nneka continues to bring the heat on Soul is Heavy. Tracks are soulful, melodic and full of heart... there's no filler here. If you're curious about Nneka check out her mixtape with J Period "The Madness" and then give this album a try if you're still interested.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nneka is Heavy and Underrated March 9, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Nneka keeps it real. As you listen to any of her albums you can feel that she is honest, intelligent and has witnessed and experienced a lot. Her lyrics are raw and heartfelt. She has grown musically with this new album, it has a wider range of instrumentation. All her albums are amazing, but what is different with this album is that she has a bigger, fuller sound. When Nneka is singing/speaking everyone should listen because everything she has to say has a deep meaning. I highly recommend giving Nneka a listen, and I highly recommend that you recommend her to others as well because she is definitely underrated. I was lucky enough to meet Nneka and I saw her perform live. She is truly an amazing person and performer. Nneka and her band were incredible!

So if you are unsure if you should purchase her album, then go see her live and you will see for yourself how amazing she is. Support true, honest artists like Nneka!
