Book Description

October 1, 1998
Spiritually dry times occur for a reason: They give us a thirst for the living water that only God can provide and allow us to experience the futility of losing our soul to this world, so that we will get serious about keeping it to life eternal.

Rediscover life in the kingdom of God as practiced by saints and martyrs, prophets and psalmists. The paths they walked are for the weary and worn-out, the bruised and battered, the disillusioned and despairing, the hurting and the hopeless.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

“HOW IS IT THAT I CAN BE CONSISTENTLY EXPERIENCING GOD’S PRESENCE, sensing his love, and feeling the power of the spirit AND THEN ALL OF THE SUDDEN-NOTHING? I continue the same practices I was doing in prayer and devotion, but with entirely different results. There is no sense of God’s presence, only dryness in the Scriptures, and hollowness in prayer.” Are you searching for new meaning in your spiritual life? “Many of us have felt mired in busyness, the pain of our past, apathy toward God, phoniness in prayer, our own self-absorption, or in a general feeling of lostness in our spiritual life,” writes Howard Baker. But, he says, these “desert times” occur for a reason. They give us a thirst for the living water that only God can provide and allow us to experience the futility of losing our soul to this world, so that we will get serious about keeping it to life eternal. Soul Keeping is a metaphor for living a fulfilling, passionate life in Christ. In it you’ll rediscover life in the kingdom of God as practiced by saints and martyrs, prophets and psalmists. The paths they walked are for the weary and worn-out, the bruised and battered, the disillusioned and despairing, the hurting and the hopeless. If you’re struggling in your spiritual life and searching for renewed passion for God, the paths described in Soul Keeping will provide rest for your soul as you richly experience God and His presence. “Ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is, and walk in it; and you shall find rest for your souls.”-Jeremiah 6:16

5.0 out of 5 stars Great depth and spiritual wisdom, January 13, 1999

This review is from: Soul Keeping: Ancient Paths of Spiritual Direction (Paperback)
Few books guide us in how to actually come close to God -- and stay there. This book not only addresses the problems of meaninglessness, depression, and dryness that arise as we spiral further and further out of God's orbit; but also nails down the core problem: self-centeredness and self-will; and gives practical ways, historically proven by many saints, to move yourself back into relationship with God. Solidly based on the author's personal experience -- he writes of what he knows. Highly recommended if you truly have a desire to know God as revealed in Jesus.

I loved this book and highly recommend it to anyone looking to deepen their relationship with God. Unlike other books with "steps" or actions to take to enliven your relationship with God, this book provides practical advice, rooted in our Christian legacy, which actually draws you closer to God.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Starting Place, March 26, 2010

This review is from: Soul Keeping: Ancient Paths of Spiritual Direction (Paperback)
I really enjoyed Baker's book. While there is certainly excellent food for thought for anyone, this is a great starting place for anyone who is testing the waters of spiritual direction. This book is part of a larger series from NAVPRESS called The Spiritual Formation Line (which edited by Dallas Willard).
One thing I appreciated from Baker is that he pools together quotes very well. I don't want to give the impression that he is one of those authors who doesn't write but merely gathers citations from others. The author strikes the right balance of introducing some of the master's and some relatively obscure sources, to strengthen and estasblish his point.
I read the book in a contemplative fashion and limited myself to one chapter per day. I think it has its largest effect this way.
You will not find a lot of content on how to advise others but what you will find are some excellent questions and food for thought that will dirve you closer to the heart of the master. That is the best place to be to give spiritual direction for yourself and others. I enjoyed the book so much I decided to check out The Glorious Pursuit by Gary Thomas which is another title in the Spritual Formation line from NAVPRESS.
