Great depth and spiritual wisdom,

Few books guide us in how to actually come close to God -- and stay there. This book not only addresses the problems of meaninglessness, depression, and dryness that arise as we spiral further and further out of God's orbit; but also nails down the core problem: self-centeredness and self-will; and gives practical ways, historically proven by many saints, to move yourself back into relationship with God. Solidly based on the author's personal experience -- he writes of what he knows. Highly recommended if you truly have a desire to know God as revealed in Jesus.

I loved this book and highly recommend it to anyone looking to deepen their relationship with God. Unlike other books with "steps" or actions to take to enliven your relationship with God, this book provides practical advice, rooted in our Christian legacy, which actually draws you closer to God.

A Great Starting Place,

I really enjoyed Baker's book. While there is certainly excellent food for thought for anyone, this is a great starting place for anyone who is testing the waters of spiritual direction. This book is part of a larger series from NAVPRESS called The Spiritual Formation Line (which edited by Dallas Willard).
One thing I appreciated from Baker is that he pools together quotes very well. I don't want to give the impression that he is one of those authors who doesn't write but merely gathers citations from others. The author strikes the right balance of introducing some of the master's and some relatively obscure sources, to strengthen and estasblish his point. I read the book in a contemplative fashion and limited myself to one chapter per day. I think it has its largest effect this way. You will not find a lot of content on how to advise others but what you will find are some excellent questions and food for thought that will dirve you closer to the heart of the master. That is the best place to be to give spiritual direction for yourself and others. I enjoyed the book so much I decided to check out The Glorious Pursuit by Gary Thomas which is another title in the Spritual Formation line from NAVPRESS.

This is quite simply one of the most valuable Christian books I have ever read. I plan on reading it devotionally on a regular basis for a long time. If you are tired of people describing Christian life in a variety of unrealistic ways (everything should be rosy with you all the time or you're not in God's will), and want a book that will bring you into a much more intimate, personal relationship with Jesus then buy this book. I buy copies of this book and give them away regularly--that's how valuable this book has been to me. It's been simply life-changing!!
