5.0 out of 5 stars What you see is certainly what you get!
And what do you see? Five hardened veterans of country/rock music, musicians and singers worthy of their own halls of fame. The Kentucky Headhunters are some of the best of the best, the elite in modern outlaw music.

And no, I'm not playing them up.

3.0 out of 5 stars Kentucky Musicians Branch Out
Listening to the Headhunters is like taking a road trip through the American south in a beat down dual-purpose farm truck. "Soul" is a stop in a different city with each track, experiencing the different cultural and musical perspectives each with a unique local slant. Around in one incarnation or another since 1968, the Grammy-winning headhunters have put together an...

And what do you see? Five hardened veterans of country/rock music, musicians and singers worthy of their own halls of fame. The Kentucky Headhunters are some of the best of the best, the elite in modern outlaw music.

And no, I'm not playing them up.

This album is aptly titled. It has a soul of its own. Take the terrific blues number "Have You Ever Loved a Woman," with beautiful guitar and piano solos. Or "Lookin' For Mr. Perfect," a tribute to man's imperfections. The witty, divorce-inspied "Last Night I Met Carl Perkins" is another great number. "Lonely Nights" is emotionally charged and perfect. The sensual feel of "You Got It" (about an interracial relationship) is a highlite, delving into territory not often explored in country music. Even "Everyday People" leans away from the blandness of most of it's ilk.

"Soul" is a CD that takes on a life of its own. The Kentucky Headhunters have a record of making great music; they do not stop here. Truly, this CD lives in your heart, your mind...and yes, your soul.

Listening to the Headhunters is like taking a road trip through the American south in a beat down dual-purpose farm truck. "Soul" is a stop in a different city with each track, experiencing the different cultural and musical perspectives each with a unique local slant. Around in one incarnation or another since 1968, the Grammy-winning headhunters have put together an album consisting of soulful southern vocals, a forcefully funky rhythm section and a Hammond B-3 that accompanies tunes like "Last Night I Met Carl Perkins" and "I Still Wanna be Your Man." Impressively structured, the bass track is layered perfectly underneath a fusion of raw twang and smooth slide blues.
The Headhunters deliver a fusion of southern-influenced Country & Rock N' Roll, livening things up with different approaches to each individual track.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Music from a real band, May 19, 2003

I have been enjoying this band's music since before they were a band! "Soul" takes them to a new level -- they expand on their own unique sound, with twinges of Delbert McClinton, Van Morrison and Freddie King. Don't expect "main stream" Country stations to play many of these cuts, but for anyone who has music in their soul, this is an excellent addition to one's personal playlist. Seeing these numbers performed live will be the icing on the cake. Buy it! JDWL

4.0 out of 5 stars Still making great music, May 15, 2003

I have seen The Headhunters 6 times and I have met them three times . They and their crew are very nice and approachable. As such, whenver The Headhunters release an album I automatically purchase it without hearing any of it's music. Except, for The "Stompin Grounds" project, I have not been dissapointed.
The highlights of this C.D come from their stage show. Several times I heard Richard Young sing and play lead guitar on a blues number and wondered when were they finally going to put it out. Well, it's here - "Have You Ever Loved A Woman?" a seven minute jam featuring Johhnie Johnson on piano, Reese Wynans on Organ, and Greg Martin (not Richard) on lead Guitar.

Another highlight is the last song - "What You See Is What You Get' This number has the Headhunters telling their story and then it shifts into a drum solo by Fred Young. In concert he would discard his drumsticks half way through and continue playing with his bare hands. Something tells me he did this here.

Other songs include touches of "Memphis Blues" and riffs similiar to those of "Bad Company" Also, Doug Phelps's vocals have improved considerably. A fine effort!
