Book Description

April 10, 2001
No love is more consuming and passionate than that one has for God. And nothing is more beautiful than that love when it is expressed as poetry.

In The Soul in Love, Deepak Chopra presents us with five great writers whose lives span seven centuries: Rumi, the sublime Persian poet who sang out his verses in ecstatic longing for God. Mirabai, an Indian princess who walked away from her life of privilege to be closer to her Dark Lord. Kabir, born to a lowly family of weavers in India, only to rise to the heights of wisdom and song. Hafiz, an Islamic master who reveled in the joys of the flesh as a way to the soul. And Tagore, the celebrated modern Indian writer who first made the West aware of the richness of Eastern devotional poetry.

Returning to the theme that inspired The Love Poems of Rumi and On the Shores of Eternity, Deepak Chopra gives us a rapturous experience of human passion, inspired by the soul’s yearning for the sacred source
of love.

"Immortal love doesn’t need poetry. However, it is our good fortune that some of the God-intoxicated have written words that permit access into their ecstatic world. Particularly in the East, in that exotically woven
belt of lands that stretches from Arabia to the Indian subcontinent, poets and saints are never far apart.

In this collection I have gathered a few of the most revered, beginning in the medieval period and extending to this century. The name of Rumi has gathered much luster recently, but the others — Kabir, Hafiz, Tagore, and Mirabai — deserve just as much recognition. In their own cultures they stand as beacons of inspiration, largely because the common people have taken them into their hearts and continue joyfully to sing their words to this very day."

5.0 out of 5 stars The Soul in Love - Poems of Ecstasy, June 21, 2001

This review is from: The Soul in Love: Classic Poems of Ecstasy and Exaltation (Hardcover)
The Soul in Love is a lovely journey... passionate in its offerings of how our souls are stirred by the words of Rumi, Hafiz, Kabir, Mirabai and Tagore. I was especially touched by the words of Tagore. In Distant Words Tagore inspires us with the morning dew expressed in these few words-

"You send me love letters in the moon," The night said to the sun. "And I leave you my answer As tears upon the grass."

All lovely and thought provoking!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love's Spiritual Ecstasy, October 1, 2006
This review is from: The Soul in Love: Classic Poems of Ecstasy and Exaltation (Hardcover)
"There is a rare experience that can bring more delight than falling in love - falling in love with God. Both are mysteries of the soul." ~Deepak Chopra

Deepak Chopra presents classic poems from Rumi, Hafiz, Kabir, Mirabai and Rabindranath Tagore to explore immortal love in devotional poetry. These poems are filled with love and longing for the divine. I was especially happy to find poems by the Indian princess Mirabai and always love reading Rumi's thoughts.

"Sunlight spreads over a face in the shadows
Like the flower of truth beginning to unfold." ~Rumi

This book is born of Deepak Chopra's own love for God and his translations embody the joy and lyrical heart of each original poem. His understanding of deep spiritual mysteries in no doubt encourages a deeper understanding and that translates into a much more beautiful reading experience.

He captures the depths of Mirabai's longings in "Where Love Is First," where she almost seems to long for the next life with such intensity, we feel as if her soul will fly from her body to be with God.

"Take me to that place where no one can go
Where death is afraid
And swans alight to play
On the overflowing lake of love."

A brief introduction to each poet is included to give an added historical perspective. What is especially beautiful is that I can hear Deepak Chopra's voice reading me the poems as I sink into contemplation. Through reading this book of poems you can discover why a love for God is a much more lasting ecstasy.

I especially love his translation of "Distant Words" by Rabindranath Tagore where the moon sends us the love letters of God. It feels as close to the original translation as I can personally remember. Thoughts from poets of the past mingle with the love in Deepak's own soul and this creates a memorable collection of spiritual beauty.

"The Soul in Love" would make a perfect gift for someone you love who has an interest in spirituality and a desire to know how poets of the past have explored the light radiating from their hearts. This is truly a spiritual treasure!
