Book Description

June 1, 2009
What lies in the soul of a man? Love, laughter, heartache and sorrow? Pride, fear, rage and contentment? The true measure of a man lies in his heart and in his soul. Trials are measured and grounded by inner feelings and the expectations placed on them and they persevere. The weights of the world sometimes are carried on their shoulders. From socio-economic barriers, to racial tensions, broken hearts, to new found faith-experience the plight of man, as only he can explain it, told from his perspective and from his heart. Through expressions of the history of his past, the reality of his present, and the optimism of his future, these gifted men relate what stirs a man's soul and ignites his actions and his thinking. Men the world over have always been much maligned and strident in how life portrays and prefaces their successes and failures. This collection of enlightening stories personifies the sentiment, faith, resilience and love embodied in the creation God made in His own image. The Soul of a Man is a Divine truth and an affirmation of the passion running through the minds of men where hearts and souls are bared. In continuation of the Triumph series, the second book, The Soul of a Man: A Triumph of My Soul Anthology, features these brilliant men; Joe Thomas, Jihad, William Fredrick Cooper, Alvin C. Romer, Marc Lacy, Maurice M. Gray, Jr., Brian Ganges, Jarold Imes, K.L. Belvin, Joey Pinkney, Thomas Ashburn, Jr., Clarence "Baba Simba" Mollock, Tyrell Floyd and Eddrick Dejuan.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a Book, August 23, 2009
This review is from: The Soul of a Man: A Triumph of My Soul Anthology (Paperback)
I originally bought this book because a friend of mine was one of the authors, Mr. Brian Ganges. We had gone to high school together , and i was very interested to hear he had written part of this book. At first, when he told me the title, and the main concept of the book, I was a little skeptical, being, not only a white person, but a female as well. So, i bought the book ,and decided to take a chance. I am so glad that i did. This book is truly amazing-it is so well thought out and engaging.
This book is for anyone of any race or gender who has ever gone through turmoil in their own lives, which I think everyone can relate to. This book gives you so many dfferent insights as to how to turn your life around, and help you really connect with God. As an example with Mr. Brian Ganges, he leads us through his spiritual journey to find god within himself and really connect to him. To find this journey during your college years, when so many of us are just frailing around, trying to find some sort of meaning in our lives, is truly inspiring.
All these men should be applauded for baring their souls and really making the people think about what's really important in life, and where to find it.
After reding this book from beginning to end, I can truly see why this book is so popular with people of every age.
This book is a definite must read for anyone, whether they are young or old, black or white, male or female, It is a very uplifting book and a true soul searching journey told through the hearts of these wonderful authors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Someting I can pass on to my sons..., August 14, 2009
This review is from: The Soul of a Man: A Triumph of My Soul Anthology (Paperback)

The Soul of A Man Anthology....

At first glace at the title, I didn't know what to expect from the read. With 14 contributors, I didn't know if they were all working on one story together, telling different versions of the same story or what? I read the media kit and began to gain some perspective. Then I thought about the word soul, and pondered, are these men really gonna bear their soul, or just pretend. Are they gonna give me something I can pass on to my son's for guidance, or is this gonna be another, "woman you need to know how to treat your man book?" I rolled the dice, purchased my copy and from the first contributor, Alvin C Romer and his statement "accountability should be first and foremost" I was hooked and enjoyed this book thoroughly! All fourteen contributors, from Alvin to Brian; from Clarence to Jarold, told gripping tales of the men they use to be, the men they are today and the men they are evolving into. These are not shallow tales written by men with puffed up egos seeking praise and undeserving applause. These are stories from the hearts of men, REAL MEN, Men who are not afraid to admit their rights, wrongs, desires, strengths, weaknesses, what makes them laugh and even at times, cry. All of the testimonies were enlightening and had a great deal of substance, but if I may be bias for just this one occasion, I must tip my hat to Mr. Joey Pinkney; Like Father Like Son was so gripping, I didn't want it to end. Mr. Eddrick Dejuan; It took great courage to realize that harsh endings, may be the doorway to greater beginnings. Mr. Brian Ganges; His transformation during college was admirable and nobel, something a lot of men don't come to grips to doing until they are at least 20 years older and in their 40's! Mr. Clarence "Baba Simba" Mollock; His endurance as a young man in school, his speech issues, his breakthrough onto his breakthrough of holding the chair as the third president of Griot's Circle of Maryland should encourage any youth experiencing the same difficulties, and teach them not to view the fact that they are different as a disability but the portal to endless possibilities. Mr. William Fredrick Cooper; His comparison to MJ and the playoffs against the Pistons became crystal clear as he too experiences his own literary breakthrough. Mr. Marc Lacy had me in stitches when he played devils advocate, allowing his pants to sag in embarrassment just as his son's did and Mr. Jihad... Peace & Blessings be with you always brother. There are plenty of young men can benefit from your wisdom! I guess different tales touch different people in different ways, depending on where they are in their journey of life. Because of where I am today as a mother raising two young men, these five stories touched real close to home for me for various reasons. All of these men are to be commended for their talents, their braveness for conveying such truthful feelings and emotions and I look forward to reading more from these authors, either as individuals or in another triumphing anthology...

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Insightful, August 11, 2009
This review is from: The Soul of a Man: A Triumph of My Soul Anthology (Paperback)
This book provides an insight into what we often overlook. I highly recommend it and think it should be mandatory reading for any black male entering high school. The authors have connected with a subject that needs to be continuously addressed, even in this day where we see a black president in the White House. Brian "BG" Ganges, is eloquent in his choice of words in his contribution to The Soul of a Man. I applaud all of the contributors to this book, and wish them the best.
