What a Book,
By
This review is from: The Soul of a Man: A Triumph of My Soul Anthology (Paperback)
I originally bought this book because a friend of mine was one of the authors, Mr. Brian Ganges. We had gone to high school together , and i was very interested to hear he had written part of this book. At first, when he told me the title, and the main concept of the book, I was a little skeptical, being, not only a white person, but a female as well. So, i bought the book ,and decided to take a chance. I am so glad that i did. This book is truly amazing-it is so well thought out and engaging.
This book is for anyone of any race or gender who has ever gone through turmoil in their own lives, which I think everyone can relate to. This book gives you so many dfferent insights as to how to turn your life around, and help you really connect with God. As an example with Mr. Brian Ganges, he leads us through his spiritual journey to find god within himself and really connect to him. To find this journey during your college years, when so many of us are just frailing around, trying to find some sort of meaning in our lives, is truly inspiring. All these men should be applauded for baring their souls and really making the people think about what's really important in life, and where to find it. After reding this book from beginning to end, I can truly see why this book is so popular with people of every age. This book is a definite must read for anyone, whether they are young or old, black or white, male or female, It is a very uplifting book and a true soul searching journey told through the hearts of these wonderful authors.

Someting I can pass on to my sons...,
By Marie Antionette "The Queen" (Jersey) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Soul of a Man: A Triumph of My Soul Anthology (Paperback)
The Soul of A Man Anthology.... At first glace at the title, I didn't know what to expect from the read. With 14 contributors, I didn't know if they were all working on one story together, telling different versions of the same story or what? I read the media kit and began to gain some perspective. Then I thought about the word soul, and pondered, are these men really gonna bear their soul, or just pretend. Are they gonna give me something I can pass on to my son's for guidance, or is this gonna be another, "woman you need to know how to treat your man book?" I rolled the dice, purchased my copy and from the first contributor, Alvin C Romer and his statement "accountability should be first and foremost" I was hooked and enjoyed this book thoroughly! All fourteen contributors, from Alvin to Brian; from Clarence to Jarold, told gripping tales of the men they use to be, the men they are today and the men they are evolving into. These are not shallow tales written by men with puffed up egos seeking praise and undeserving applause. These are stories from the hearts of men, REAL MEN, Men who are not afraid to admit their rights, wrongs, desires, strengths, weaknesses, what makes them laugh and even at times, cry. All of the testimonies were enlightening and had a great deal of substance, but if I may be bias for just this one occasion, I must tip my hat to Mr. Joey Pinkney; Like Father Like Son was so gripping, I didn't want it to end. Mr. Eddrick Dejuan; It took great courage to realize that harsh endings, may be the doorway to greater beginnings. Mr. Brian Ganges; His transformation during college was admirable and nobel, something a lot of men don't come to grips to doing until they are at least 20 years older and in their 40's! Mr. Clarence "Baba Simba" Mollock; His endurance as a young man in school, his speech issues, his breakthrough onto his breakthrough of holding the chair as the third president of Griot's Circle of Maryland should encourage any youth experiencing the same difficulties, and teach them not to view the fact that they are different as a disability but the portal to endless possibilities. Mr. William Fredrick Cooper; His comparison to MJ and the playoffs against the Pistons became crystal clear as he too experiences his own literary breakthrough. Mr. Marc Lacy had me in stitches when he played devils advocate, allowing his pants to sag in embarrassment just as his son's did and Mr. Jihad... Peace & Blessings be with you always brother. There are plenty of young men can benefit from your wisdom! I guess different tales touch different people in different ways, depending on where they are in their journey of life. Because of where I am today as a mother raising two young men, these five stories touched real close to home for me for various reasons. All of these men are to be commended for their talents, their braveness for conveying such truthful feelings and emotions and I look forward to reading more from these authors, either as individuals or in another triumphing anthology... Extremely Insightful,
This review is from: The Soul of a Man: A Triumph of My Soul Anthology (Paperback)
This book provides an insight into what we often overlook. I highly recommend it and think it should be mandatory reading for any black male entering high school. The authors have connected with a subject that needs to be continuously addressed, even in this day where we see a black president in the White House. Brian "BG" Ganges, is eloquent in his choice of words in his contribution to The Soul of a Man. I applaud all of the contributors to this book, and wish them the best.

Insight to the Soul of a Man!!!,
By LaToya S. Watkins "LaToya S. Watkins" (Plano, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Soul of a Man: A Triumph of My Soul Anthology (Paperback)
Prepare to be astounded by an astounding collection of eloquent works! Ms. Gabrielle has gathered a very diverse group of artists between the pages of this book and those artists have managed to place meaning and definition on the soul of a man. As this group of talented male authors take readers on a journey ranging from fatherhood to prison sentences, from physical handicaps to societal ones, you walk away with something meaningful and new. Maybe the gift given from the reading of this work is prespective, maybe it's simply insight to the soul of a man. I'm sure that the experience will be delightfully different for every reader, but something will be gained.
Some people believe that art is meant to create a movement toward change, and this collection holds true to that movement. The Soul of a Man is not only a wonderful read, but an amazing journey!!!

What Lies In the Soul of a Man?,
By
This review is from: The Soul of a Man: A Triumph of My Soul Anthology (Paperback)
That question is answered quite eloquently several times over by this dynamic group of men. Elissa Gabrielle has done it again! Ms. Gabrielle has put together a collection of short stories that will ignite your soul and this time, they are all written by some very talented men! From the social and political stance of Mr. Alvin Romer who takes us to another level with his story "What Lies in the Souls of Men?" To Mr. William Frederick Cooper who dares to bare his soul as he talks about love and heartbreak with his story "NO REGRETS. . .(A True Story)." A collection of this magnitude would not be complete without looking at the spiritual journey through the eyes of a man and that man is Mr. Brian Ganges who teaches us about "Manning Up with God." There is something for everyone within these pages. Well done Ms. Gabrielle.

What really Lies in the Souls of Men?,
By
This review is from: The Soul of a Man: A Triumph of My Soul Anthology (Paperback)
The soul of a man arrives precisely at the same time as his muscular substance. It is not likely he will have real knowledge of its existence at time of arrival. He will see the food he eats, the water he drinks, and take notice of the sea, sky, and land all about him. He will not see the one thing that he cannot exist without; his soul. He may know that something of great power abides within him. He is cognizant that his very existence totally relies on that something, and in time he becomes very conscious of his soul. He realizes that it will serve as his guide through life and by his belief in God, it will live on long after his mortal self has been returned from which it came, the Earth. Therefore, he
must continue to search his soul, to keep it as pure and as clean as possible, knowing it is far more valuable to lose a world, but a man should never lose his soul. Take a journey into his soul, his mind and his heart. Learn from him and accept his words as only he can deliver them, with truth and vigor, honesty and vitality. Experience his pain, joy, his plight, his deliverance through his story of triumph over adversity. Discover what's really on his mind as he bares his soul. ESSENCE Bestselling author, JIHAD, delivers a straight in-your-face letter to "caged kings" on lockdown with brutal honesty and power. Alvin C. Romer sets it off when he reveals what really lies in his heart and soul. Marc Lacy shows his versatility in his powerful story, "Bottomed Out," while Maurice M. Gray, Jr. showcases his comedic ability. Brian Ganges, a literary newcomer and author to watch out for really sets the tone of The Soul of a Man with his piece, "Manning Up with God." KL the writer comes with a tender story that will blow your mind. "Mr. Sentimental" - the incomparable William Fredrick Cooper displays his brilliance and deliverance in "No Regrets." Jazz great, Joe Thomas chronicles his life, from a child growing up in Newark, NJ to the Korean War, to his illustrious music career. There is literally something for everyone in this book where these masterful contributors bare their hearts and souls. A definite page-turner with a unique look into the minds of men. 10 STARS!
