Overall, this is an excellent CD with many crushing and atmospheric songs.
The slow and heavy songs build up to satisfaction. In fact they are so good that I find myself skipping the harder songs like Nothing and Cold Skin because I feel they wreck the mood.
My favorites are Dissipation, Suffer Alone, In Silence, Despair, and especially Incandescence.
I would also like to point out that their drummer kicks ass. He shows a lot of restraint, but still lets loose some amazing fills.

This album is perhaps one of the better albums I have in my collection. I have followed Mindrot since Endeavor and I feel Mindrot has found themselves musically. Lyrically they have never held back. THe lyrics are so deep and thought provoking. To put it bluntly they are depressing. All you have to do is listen to track 2 called "Nothing". This is music for the emotional listener. IF you are a fan of Doom you have to listen to Mindrot. If there band members can keep themselves out of jail I expect very big things out of them. At the rate they are going they should become legends amongst there genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most talented bands out there., November 8, 2002

Sadly, when I heard of Mindrot's breakup in March of 98', I was sadly disappointed. It's funny how I got hooked onto Mindrot, for maybe a year or so I corresponded with one of the band members online & learned of the band that way. I have since lost connect with him. As for the album, "Soul" -- it's definatly something that remains in my CD player. These guys had the ability to bring forth, not only great music, but there was defiantly soul behind their words.

Two years have passed and I still can't believe Mindrot's gone. Soul, as well as Dawning, are two of the most crushing, atmospheric and involving records I've ever heard. Soul is one of those records you listen to from start to finish and you don't know where time went, a black abyss of devastating riffs and melancholic melodies that'll make you push "play" again as it ends. If you're into dark, emotive and just HEAVY music, Soul is a must-have! Just check out "Incandescence" and let go of your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nu-Metal???, February 8, 2005
This review is from: Soul (Audio CD)
Mmmmm the Cd came out in 1998 not 2005! Hardly Nu-Metal...only if he knew! True Mindrot fans know. The body we all knew as Mindrot is spinning in his grave...

4.0 out of 5 stars Cult classic of American DOOM metal, November 23, 2010
This review is from: Soul (Audio CD)
1998's Soul was the second full-length album from US doom metal band Mindrot. The cult metal band was only active for a brief period of time in the mid `90s, but they left behind an impressive legacy of doom.

Mindrot's sound bridged the traditional doom metal of Black Sabbath and Candlemass with elements of death metal (and to some extent thrash). Sabbath-style guitar riffs are paired with crushing rhythms, and the vocals range from clean/almost whispered to a frenzied shouting/not quite death metal growling. Soul is as bleak as it is heavy, conjuring feelings of despair (as on the 10-minute monster "Despair") as well as Evoken. I also hear similarities to better-known US doom metal bands Morgion and November's Doom.

Sadly, Soul ended up being Mindrot's final offering, as the band members moved on to other projects. The album remains a classic example of death-laden doom metal, and one that any serious doom metal fan should hear.
