Discovered Outstanding New Talent!,
By Shelly (Decatur, GA. U.S.A.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Soul Mixtape (Audio CD)
Having always been a fan of DJJ's work, I bought this CD and was pleasantly surprised that it was more on the R&B vibe than the usual club material. It turned me on to some great new talents I have never heard of. It also includes such acts the splendid teenager Josephine Sincere, and Aka Soula who sounds like Curtis Mayfield. As a result, I bought Josephine's new CD and I love it! I also bought Dwele's based on this album. If you're into finding new discoveries who are better than the standard fare you hear on the radio daily, then this CD is for you. If you're looking for a "house" or "club" record, then it's not.

How Did I Sleep on This?,
By Sister Holistic (Atlanta , GA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Soul Mixtape (Audio CD)
Although DJ Jazzy Jeff has been on the music scene forever, I never really got into him. He has truly earned my respect with this compilation of soul music. There were vocalists on here that I'm familiar with and love, such as Micheal Bohannon, Martin Luther, Angie Stone and Omar, but then he came with some new folks who blew my mind and had me online trying to find out who they were and why I hadn't heard of them. The first song by Ejiay, "Beautiful Lady" is a joint that i play over and over. Josephine Sincere on track 2 keeps it flowing with her "I Like It" (no, this isn't the DeBarge song!) and it jut continues on and on. It even has a shout out to old school Prince with Demien putting a new spin on it with his original song, "Erotic Dreams". There isn't one weak track on this CD and deserves the support of anyone claiming to love real soul music.

I am so glad i stumbled on this cd, Dj Jazzy Jeff compiles a great mixture of songs reminicent of Marvyn Gaye, great vocalists and production. Every true soul music lover should own this CD. Perfect blend of Hip Hop, Funk and Soul. Creative songs and lyrics. Definetley musically above anything heard on the radio today. This CD reminds me how much I love music. ITs perfect to set a the mood, sing along, feel the beat, chill and just cruise....Thanks DJ Jazzy Jeff for sprinkling me on some great music!

Do It Jeff, Do It! (5 Stars),

First things first: This isn't your typical Jazzy Jeff mixtape. If you're looking for something that sounds like The Magnificent or Hip Hop Forever Vol. 2, then The Soul Mixtape isn't what you want. This album contains exactly what the title suggests. This is more velvet than it is boom bap. More Jill Scott than Nas. More Martin Luther than The Roots. More, well, you get the idea......There are no readily apparent flaws on this album. You'd be hard pressed to find any. If you're looking into this, then you already know Jeff's pedigree. I'm thoroughly convinced that the man can scratch and blend ANYTHING after hearing this. I'm not sure if this kind of thing has been done before, but this is the first time that I've experienced a soul/r&b mixtape and after what Jeff has put forward, I'd like to hear a lot more of them. I strongly urge any and every fan of soul/r&b to pick up a copy of this a.s.a.p. Highly reccomended. Standout Tracks: Honestly, every track on this album is equally tight.

I'm not super familiar with soul but this mix is unbelievable. Just pick it up, you absolutely will not regret it. Valencia Robinson is the highlight for me, overall the mix is really something else. Well mixed, beautiful programming, it's almost too easy!

In two words, "SIMPLY SUPERB". Every track from start to finish, top to bottom, head to toe, wonderful. Each track stands on its own yet beautifully complements the next one.I wholeheartedly endorse this CD and applaud Jazzy and the force behind his power to put this together and then present it to us. Will be absorbing this while waiting for the next one. You have made this Philly girl, very, very, very happy. Thank you.

It Just Wasn't Hitten Me,
This review is from: Soul Mixtape (Audio CD)
I felt this album could have been a lot more neo-soulful. Only three of the songs I have really enjoyed. The rest sounded ok. The beats should be droppin wit some hip-hop, r-n-bish feel with the right amount of jazz. I did not feel that in this album
