5.0 out of 5 stars so stupid its good
The plot: An airline passenger's dog is accidentally turned into puppy chow and the resulting lawsuit enables him to buy his own airline. Method Man, his best friend, hampers his efforts to run a legit business.

The review: Lots of bathroom humor but if you liked How High then you'll definitely like this movie

3.0 out of 5 stars Unfortunately there's not enough of BLING, BLING to save this film.
I usually love crude humor, or can at least tolerate it. I love so-called "Black" comedies. I'm not easily offended, either. `Soul plane' is just down right stupid!, You'll probably never see another movie quite like this! Some would say that's a good thing, but as I watched this I caught a few laughs. I've seen some pimped out rides, but a pimped out plane? I think...

I think people are taking this movie a bit too seriously, or they don't know how, when or why to laugh at this specific type of cultural humor, this is very obviously a FUBU movie. This is another movie that just pokes fun at everything & everybody.

Racial stereotypes and black/white culture are embraced rather than dispelled. Some of the jokes are forced and other's had there awkward moments. Tom Arnold can be fun to watch, although he has not made anything like that since 'True Lies' but in this movie he was just average. Snoop Dogg can be a lot of fun, even in bad films, but here he is one of the worst things on board even though he had some funny lines. Monique was her usual self in her role. Dwayne Adway is a bit weak in the leading role he needed to stick to being the straight man. Stewardess Sofia Vergara has landed in this film from being pictured on a footballer's arm. And like Francine Dee (who plays the Chinese stripper here) is another one of the models and women that have appeared as portraits by the GB artist and psychic Stephen Armourae. This film tries to be an Airplane spoof. But that in itself was a spoof. Double negatives don't work well.

I'm sort of scared to even recommend this movie for purchase, I rather say rent it out first, just to be on the safe side. For all of you that like the black comedic-type films similar to some of the Wayans Brothers work, then this is the film for you. Prepare yourself for a crazy flight aboard the Soul Plane.

2.0 out of 5 stars 2-1/2 stars -- Some funny moments, but really a stupid movie, April 12, 2004
I saw this movie with really no high expectations because, well, it features mostly rappers -- most notably Method Man and Snoop Dogg. Basically, the movie is about a regular guy, Dakwon (Kevin Hart), who gets injured on an airplane; then he sues and wins a big cash settlement, and he decided to start his own airline, NWA Airlines, with the money.

Like I said in the title, there ARE some funny moments in here, like when Snoop Dogg, who plays the pilot, says he's afraid of heights. But the movie starts to get really crazy when you see what's going on in different parts of the plane. Not that the craziness isn't funny, but it's like this: in one wing you see passengers riding in the seats; then in another wing you see a bar; then in ANOTHER wing there's a strip club; and in STILL another wing there's a casino, and I'm like, "How big IS this plane?"

As far as the cast goes, I have no idea how Tom Arnold got in this movie. And the idea of his wife, son and daughter catching "jungle fever" (the son discovering hip-hop music and style; the wife and daughter picking up black men) is kind of played out -- especially since the way in which each of these things happen is semi-funny rather than COMPLETELY funny. And Method Man's acting performance in this movie was about as interesting as his performance in Belly.

Speaking of Belly, this seems like another instance where a hip-hop video director tried to make a movie look like a lengthened version of one of his/her videos (it was directed by Jessy Terrero). That probably explains all the cameos, like D.L. Hughley as the bathroom attendant and John Witherspoon (what would a Black movie be without him?) as the blind man. This movie IS silly as probably planned, but I still think you can skip it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Stupid, stupid, and did I say...STUPID, movie, June 3, 2004
By
The title of my review says it all. Absolutely STUPID. I had low expectations when i walked in this movie, hoping that maybe it would've been good and I would've enjoyed. But no, the movie was everything I expected. Low grade dog crap! There's only a few funny parts in the movie, and then they get repeated over and over again. The toilet humor is over the top in this movie. The first couple of toilet jokes is funny, but when you keep goin with it its absolutely dull and annoying.

Thank god the movie runs at a close 90 minutes. Any long, my girlfriend and I would've been out the door. Not only are the jokes stale, but we are presented with Snoop Dog's terrible acting and his doped up, slurred voice. Tom Arnold didn't seem himself in this movie either. No wonder, I wouldn't either if I was presented with a crap story and terrible actors to contend with.

Overall, its simple. The movie sucked. Jokes were stale as two year old saltines, making it one of the worst comedies I've seen. Don't waste your six bucks on this way. Waste about 3.50 when it comes out on DVD and rent it.

5.0 out of 5 stars absolutely hilarious, July 16, 2004

This movie is absolutely hilarious. When i first saw the trailor, i was like, i have to watch it, so i did. The first time i watched it, i liked it, but i didnt think it was that good, but i wanted to watch it again, so i did, and then i realised how good the movie really is and how much i like it. Since then, ive watched it liked 10 more times, thats how much i like it.

The movie is about a black man getting money and opening his own airline. The movie does not have much of a story line, but it has a great line and script. It is about what happens on the aeroplanes and what people do on aeroplanes or would do if there was an aeroplane like that.

The movie is great and i highly recommend you watch it, at least once.

5.0 out of 5 stars Funnier than Airplane, December 14, 2005

This review is from: Soul Plane (Unrated Mile High Edition) (DVD)
This movie is right on cue for so many things and on so many levels. Having worked in the airline industry myself, I especially appreciated all the jokes on the airline industry (ie. the security girls more concerned about their benefits rather than their measley pay, every airline/airport employee's mantra; the ticket agent at the counter playing a video game, airline travel becoming more like travel on a bus, etc. etc.). But I don't want to get all deep and analytical. This movie's primary purpose is to be a comedy and boy, does it serve its purpose well. I was laughing nonstop throughout the whole movie, and the next day. I should stress that most of the humor is raunchy and is most definitely not for kids.

As an endnote, yes there are stereotypes depicted in this movie, just as there are stereotypes sadly in our everyday life. I thought the director did an excellent job portraying them in an honest, fair way while poking fun at them.

Too funny for words. Naughty food scene with blind man? Who thought that up. Nosy bathroom attendant? Better not be in my bathroom.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hop Aboard SOUL PLANE, May 25, 2004
Just a short while ago, I was remarking to a friend on how it would be nice to visit the old AIRPLANE franchise again. Although this is no AIRPLANE III, this is definitely as close as your going to get. Catered to a more urban audience, but appealing to us white boys as well, SOUL PLANE tells the story of a man who wins a lawsuit against an airline and then decides to start his own. Every racial stereotype manages its way into the film and there are plenty of yucks to go around no matter what your color or nationality. Filled with sex and harsh language, this is probably the furthest thing from a politically correct movie you'll find this year.

It's also absolutely hysterical!

3.0 out of 5 stars A fun ride!!!, August 17, 2004
This review is from: Soul Plane (Unrated Mile High Edition) (DVD)
Soul Plane does not make any sense. It's an Airplane wannabe with a ghetto twist and half the laughs. It's stirred controversy in the black community by being called 'racist' and an insult to black people. But it's still a pretty fun ride, and not very racist at all. While the humor is crass and edgy, I think it was all played for laughs and not meant to be taken seriously. And while the film was stupid and idiotic, it managed to entertain. It's 90 minutes of silly entertainment, not to be given much thought to. Rather, it's a chance to suspend disbelief, relax, and escape into the zaniness. People are taking this film a little too seriously. It's not meant for that, it's meant to be a light, fluffy, and zany comedy with some crude homor thrown in. For that, it succeeds. I won't remember this film tomorrow, but I enjoyed it while it lasted.
