Book Description

September 1998
Using a theatrical metaphor, the author masterfully demonstrates a way to become the director of one's inner life. Using Psychosynthesis as the foundation, this user-friendly format offers an innovative way to honor every nuance of the personality and soul on all levels. See life as a play, with the reader as scriptwriter, director, and all the characters. A fun, powerful approach to personal growth and new awareness.

Soul Play is an entertaining way to turn personal daily dramas into special performances. The author challenges readers to let go of the myth that change comes only through suffering. She offers a way to change that is fun and effective.

Contemporary life isn't easy, and often it's far from humorous. From our everyday perspective, life seems complex and chaotic. Captivating drama is based on contrast or conflict. Suspense is built when that which pulls us forward clashes with that which holds us back. Either we become mired in the controversy and continue to suffer the pain of separation (tragedy) or we eventually resolve the conflict and experience the excitement of a new level of harmony (comedy).

Shakespeare reminded us that we're all players on the world stage. While we want to play our part well, most of us stumble over our lines or fake our way through the scenes. We don't know how to turn our daily dramas into divine comedies. When we don't know how to orchestrate the tumult inside, life can be hell.

Hell isn't fun. To be stuck in private anguish is tragic drama. Soul Play pulls the reader out of hell, guides them through purgatory, and leads them to Paradise. It opens doors into different dimensions of consciousness and provides ways to take charge of one's inner life.

In The Divine Comedy, Dante visited all realms of experience and witnessed every nuance of human emotion from the most vile to the most sublime. It was the inner quality of a person that determined whether he or she spent time in the abyss or in the heavens. Developing inner qualities is essential to living a joyful life. Soul Play is about developing and fine-tuning one's character all one's inner characters.

From the Publisher

Vivian King's book has been hailed as special by authors, directors, actors and psychology professors for its simple and clear presentation of an enjoyable way of personal growth by seeing life as a play.

One reader commented as follows:

A few years ago, as feature reporter for a CBS affiliate, I had the pleasure of doing a television story about Dr. Vivian King's Inner Theatre. We filmed a portion of one of her workshops and I became more familiar with her unique concepts for assisting what she terms, our "unaccomplished inner actors," to evolve into "accomplished" ones. Dr. King demonstrated how Inner Theatre's goal is to assist the participant to achieve new levels of "self-awareness, self-acceptance, and self-mastery."

When I heard that Vivian King had authored a newly-published book, Soul Play, I had to read it. In doing so, I found that her writing provides a remarkable encounter between the author and reader.

In Soul Play you will be introduced to your playwright, supporting cast, director, and many others -- all, incidentally, inside you, who -- with guidance -- are eager to turn the production of your life into a masterpiece. First, however, for that to happen, the Director -- You -- have to take your proper place in the Director's Chair. Then, as Vivian King so cogently tells us, "the more skillfully we play our particular parts, the more we'll bring out the star qualities in others and make the world a better place to be -- or a better Play to see."

Now, as Director of Broadcast Media for Tapestry: The Institute for Philosophy, Religion, and the Life Sciences, it is my job -- and great joy -- to find authors and ideas for the TV discussion shows we're creating. Vivian King is one of those authors who superbly articulates a vision of what we humans are capable of becoming -- then lays out an elegant structure for manifesting that vision.

Read Soul Play and do the exercises. Then observe as time passes, what exquisite and mysterious changes are taking place in your inner and outer world!

Meister Eckhart wrote, "When the soul wishes to experience something, she simply throws out an image and enters into it." I hope you will enter into the experience of Soul Play and reap the real rewards of life, the ones that come from being the writer, actor, producer and director of your own award winning performance!

Consider yourself fortunate if you add this book to your library of favorites to read again and again. I know I will. (James Napier, Director of Broadcast Media, Tapestry: The Institute for Philosophy, Religion, and the Life Sciences).

5.0 out of 5 stars How to become the director of your life, July 21, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Soul Play: Turning Your Daily Dramas Into Divine Comedies (Paperback)
Imagine being the director of your own play. Imagine also being the playwright and your own cast of characters. Sound like a one-person show? It is! In Soul Play, Vivian King uses the metaphor of the "Inner Theatre" to represent your inner world and all that takes place inside your mind. The metaphor provides you with a way to identify and resolve issues on your own inner stage, and to do so when that resolution may seem impossible in the outer world. Soul Play will help you develop self-awareness, self-acceptance, and self- mastery. In reading this book, you, as one of the world's actors, can expect to become the director of your own life so you can play a more excellent part on the World Stage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Overview of book, July 21, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Soul Play: Turning Your Daily Dramas Into Divine Comedies (Paperback)
Here's a brief overview of what you'll find in this book. First, you'll consider the connection between your soul (playwright) and your play on Earth, and the reason why it's so easy to forget who you are behind all the masks you wear from day to day. Then you'll meet your "entourage"-your inner actors, director, and playwright, as well as members of your supporting cast and those in your audience. You'll take a tour of your inner theatre and explore the set. Here you'll discover what's happening on stage and behind the scenes. You'll explore the basement of your mind and also the upstairs (which I call the mysterium). After all that, you'll discover your director's inner sanctum and find your director's chair. Most importantly, you'll learn the secrets of who you are and what you do as the director. Using what I call the "three steps in directing," you'll have the opportunity to take one of your unaccomplished actors through all three steps to help! him or her become a star. To enhance that actor's new script, you and the playwright will explore how the role can be even better. Having practiced using the principles of directing, you'll realize that you now know how to work with the other actors to get your act together. Finally, you'll focus on the value of rehearsals and look more closely at the dark times in your life. You'll learn what to do when nothing seems to work and the stage appears empty. You'll discover what it means to give a peak performance and to enjoy each moment. And before completion, you'll also reflect on the roles you play in the Family, Organizational, and Community Theatres, and determine how your role fits into the larger World Play.

5.0 out of 5 stars Warmth and Wisdom, March 13, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Soul Play: Turning Your Daily Dramas Into Divine Comedies (Paperback)
With her innate warmth and wisdom, Vivian King, takes the reader onto, or into, their own Inner Theatre "stage" to do some safe, enjoyable, profound, transformative work. This is her best known work, though she's known in Poland and other European countries as a great teacher, with workbooks in print in English and other languages.
